Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
The client served with this grant support is employed at the Health Department of Northwest Michigan and provides mental health counseling through the school system to students k-12. She purchased her new home in November 2021. She now has a safe, secure place for her family to call home for the rest of her life. Not only does this project serve the family, but the community as a whole by retaining this key employee during a time when mental health services for our youth are so vital.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Providing women and their children with an affordable and stable home and mortgage changes the trajectory of their lives forever. In addition to an affordable home, our program educates participants on how to become fiscally independent and self-sufficient through financial coaching and credit counseling. It teaches important life lessons such as responsibility, compassion, and leadership. With these skills, and an affordable, safe place to live, they are able to accomplish so much! They are able to appropriately budget expenses and afford basic necessities, becoming less reliant on other social service and government support. They can save and plan for the future. They can utilize this new founded opportunity to succeed academically, excel in the workplace, spend time with their families, maintain healthier lifestyles, and see a better way to live. This “better way” and the lessons learned are then passed on to the next generation, ending the cycle of generational poverty.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Our program constructs quality, energy efficient homes and sells them to hardworking low-to-moderate income households. With the crisis level need for housing in our community, we will be building more homes than ever before. We are currently seeking funding for fifteen homes for our 2022-2023 build season. With the cost of construction 40% more expensive now than pre-pandemic, philanthropy is even more vital to our program's success.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
This grant was recognized twice on social media, and the thank you video that we presented at the award event was also shared on social media and our youtube channel.
Summary Comments
The need for affordable housing in our area is a well-known, complex issue. Unfortunately, it is only getting worse. For many reasons, including drastically increasing construction and land costs, supply chain issues, and a growing shortage of tradespeople, the need continues to far outpace the housing market’s ability to respond and action is needed! The staff and board at NMHFH have made it their mission to strategically grow the capacity of the organization so it can more boldly respond to this crisis, and we want to thank Hestia for helping make this very important work possible!
