Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
12 young women benefited from the free after school tutoring services. Subjects included math, English, biology, chemistry and study skills. Students met with their tutors one on one for 45 minute sessions one to two times per week.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Feedback surveys were sent on January 21, 2022 to teachers who had students in their classroom that were getting afterschool tutoring from AIM. Teachers were asked to respond to 5 statements on a 5-point scale: Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree. 5 surveys were returned. 100% of the surveys indicated they agree or strongly agree that tutoring was beneficial, students showed an improvement in confidence, and students improved more than those who did not participate in AIM tutoring. 66% teachers reported they observed an increase in class participation and 80% indicated they observed an improvement in homework being completed. A math teacher wrote: “I think it’s the only reason my student ended up passing the class."
Surveys prior to the implementation of tutoring are completed by both parents and students. They will be asked to complete a post survey May 2022 to determine overall progress, change in classroom participation, and homework completion. A second teacher survey will also be sent May 2022 to assess outcomes. Data will be available for review June 2022.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Debbie walked into the Carnegie by herself to speak with me recently. This brave seventh grader held up her phone to show me her grades and said, “See, I used to get C’s and at least one B and now I’m failing. I’m not keeping up in class and I feel disconnected from school. I heard from my friend that you can help.” Most of our students are referred by parents, teachers or counselors but Debbie took it upon herself to get the help she needs based on a referral from a girl friend who attends our AIM program. Debbie is now getting help from an AIM tutor in English and attends a Study Skills Workshop each week which would otherwise be beyond her family’s reach financially. On her way into a Study Skills session she told her younger brother, "See, I'm going to class so I can get A's and B's."
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
The needs in our community for a free afterschool tutoring program is clear. We expected to tutor 12 students this year and we presently tutor 24. Based on input received from parents and teachers, we responded by adding biology, chemistry and an 8 week national small group study skills workshop.
To keep this excellent program sustainable, Northmen Den Youth Services needs donations to support the work. We pay our tutors in order to attract and hire qualified and talented people in our community. All youth struggling with English, math or science are vulnerable to depression and loss of self-confidence, when they see constantly failing grades in front of their eyes.
It's pretty defeating to any person, especially when you are young. To keep AIM™ free for all students, we need parents and our community to donate to our programs.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The Northmen Den Youth Services publishes and sends newsletters to over 1500 people 3 times per year. In addition, our website can be found at www.northmendens.org. We also put Hestia's logo on our AIM Tutoring flyers that were distributed to Petoskey and Harbor Springs middle and high schools, teachers, counselors, students, and parents.
Summary Comments
AIM is an expensive program since we pay our tutors but it can change a teen's life immensely. Half of our students are economically disadvantaged, and both the teen and parents are so appreciative to have found help. When they come into the program, most of our students believe they are failing because it's the teacher's fault or that they are stupid. Our tutors quickly figure out how each student learns and the missing pieces of the puzzle that a student needs to understand. It's beautiful watching how individualized help with a caring person who does not judge you develop a trusting relationship. It allows the young person to begin believing in their ability to learn and grow to be a more confident person who believes in themselves. We hope to continue this program with more grants and individual gifts for the 2022-2023 school year. The expense we did not count on was renting classroom space. Carnegie's free space was nice but it wasn't the best learning space. Now that we are in a bright, smaller cozy space, the students are more comfortable engaging in conversations with each other with more laughter & good energy between tutors, students, AIM Coordinator & volunteers.
