Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
13 girls/women and 3 boys were directly involved in the School of Ballet's (SOB) inaugural year of the screendance program. However, the entire SOB (46 female, 7 male) and members of our community benefited and will continue to benefit from the program.
This fall, workshops were presented to SOB students in video camera use and editing by Haley Van Patten, CTAC SOB alum, screendance artist, and apprentice to screendance pioneer Peter Sparling. These workshops provided the necessary skills for students to choreograph and set work on their fellow dancers to create their own original screendances. The screendances were then submitted to dance festivals competitions. Two of our students' submissions were selected, upon adjudication, to be screened at alternative dance festivals this year:
-Colette McLeod, "Ice-olation Island", Rethink Dance Film Festival, Fargo, ND
-Leif VanHorn, "Recordándola", Northwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival, Kalamazoo, MI
The screendances were premiered at the HS Performing Arts Center as a part of SOB's "Fall for Bach” performance providing the community with an opportunity to experience and learn more about this alternative dance form.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Thanks to support provided by Hestia Women’s Giving Circle, the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet was able to purchase video and editing equipment including a MacBook Pro laptop, a projector and screen, video camera, and green screen necessary to launch a formal screendance program. Additional funds were used to support special video and editing workshops, staff research and training.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
According to 14 year-old, School of Ballet Pre-Professional Dancer, Colette McLeod, “Making the screendance, “Ice-olation Island” was a process that took many hours of rigorous choreography, filming, and editing. During the process, we had to take advantage of the frozen environment and learn to dance/move gracefully even when the temperatures were frigid. There was also a lot of trial and error creating my screendance, such as: using a drone to capture the aerial shots and spacing out choreography around a block. This screendance was beneficial to me because it gave me an outlet to COVID, (along with all its struggles) and put the sorrow into motion. My intention was to portray the feeling of loneliness and how isolated our world was. In the future, I would love to continue creating screendances of my own, and maybe take part in other peoples creations. I would also like to focus more on the editing process and learning everything there is to know about it. Overall, making screendances is an unforgettable challenge that has taught me leadership skill, adapting to different environments, and collaborating with a diverse group of people.”
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Thanks to support from Hestia, the screendance program has become a part of the SOB curriculum. The use of film and digital media as a tool to express movement will be incorporated into the current class structure and grow to include our younger dance students.
To enhance the curriculum, CTAC intends to seek grant support for artist-in-residence experiences that will provide our students with new perspectives and methods from preeminent dancers from across the country.

Summary Comments
We can’t thank Hestia Women’s Giving Circle enough for supporting our mission to enrich and inspire lives through the arts. This gift has not only empowered girls/women with tools that expand their creativity and ability to express themselves, it has given them a new platform for exercising leadership and problem-solving skills that will, ultimately, prepare them for higher education and future careers.
