Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

Twenty women were trained as DONA International Postpartum Doulas. Those women have gone on to provide 94 postpartum doula visits to women and families. Additionally, seven of the Postpartum Doulas are incorporating their training, care, and services into the delivery of their fulltime jobs as homevisitors, further reducing challenges to access and awareness and ramping up an equitable approach to service provision. The support being offered by those seven community based doulas is not reflected in the reported metrics above to prevent an skewing of data however it should be noted that they are incorporating this knowledge, support, and service into the delivery of their homebased services with young and growing families. Further, of the 16 traditional (non-community based) doulas listed on the MDHHS Doula Registry from Emmet County, 15 of them were members of the GSC Doula Initiative. Of those 15, nine hold contracts with Michigan Medicaid Health Plans, They are the only nine contracted with Michigan Medicaid Health Plans for Emmet County and together, they hold contracts that cover all four local Michigan Medicaid Health Plans. We continue to work through the system barriers.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

While we will not likely to host another Postpartum Doula Training, we continue to provide support and continuing education opportunities for these doulas. To date, examples include:
-Facilitation of securing approval for doulas to participate in a Spinning Babies workshop. Six GSC Doula Initiative members traveled to Cadillac in March and completed the one day training alongside OBGYNs, Chiropractors, Nurse Midwives, Certified Midwives, and Labor and Delivery Nurses
-Two Doulas were scholarshipped to attend "When Survivors Give Birth"
-Two Doulas were scholarshipped to attend Lamaze Childbirth Educator Training, so they can bring this childbirth education to the homes of clients, reducing barriers to equitable access
-Two Doulas were scholarshipped to attend Certified Lactation Counselor training so they can bring this lactation education and support to the homes of clients, reducing barriers to equitable access
-All GSC Doulas were invited to attend a "Resources for Indigenous Birth Equity" training hosted in Charlevoix
-In May and June, Nine doulas will be attending Postpartum Support International Perinatal Mood Disorders: Components of Care
Funded via grants and Oper. Budget

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

Press Releases; In application process; in our Meet the Doulas Publication introduction letter: https://greatstart.hflip.co/f2fc6d52c2.html#page/2 which is housed on our website and is being sent to all OGBYN/Family Planning Offices in March of 2024; at trainings, etc.

Summary Comments

While our reporting time frame from end of training to the end of the grant period is rather narrow, we wish to express the growth in request and service that has occurred over the past month and we see continuing in the foreseeable future. We could have written much more here, but there is limited space. Endless thanks and gratitude to each member of the Giving Circle for all that you have allowed to come to fruition. While not shared above, we have heard many, many stories from training participants regarding the positive impact their participation has brought to their own health, wellness, healing journey, and professionalism.
