Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

We exceeded our goal of providing 40 female youth with 40 female mentors. As of March 26, 2024 we have served 61 female matches in Charlevoix and Emmet counties since September 1, 2023.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

Our mentoring program in Charlevoix and Emmet counties has grown significantly this year, with thriving mentoring relationships in both our community-based and school-based programs.

Program evaluation is accomplished via consistent match support contacts to the parent, child and mentor. The Mentoring Specialist staff are required to assess and document child safety and well-being, relationship development, coaching and support, and match goals and outcomes with every contact. The length of relationship between Bigs and Littles provides an additional impact measurement, as relationships continue to develop and grow stronger over time. The average match length in Charlevoix and Emmet counties is currently over 3 years. Lastly, annual surveys of our youth report on the successful impact of our program.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

This is an example of a new match relationship. Katie, age 8, was referred to our program by her counselor as she rarely sees her mom and could use some additional female support. She is being raised by her grandparents who would like her to have a role model that will introduce her to new experiences and build her self-respect. Katie has little one-on-one time with adults and does not have a mother figure that is a good role model. Katie loves animals, sports and music and is happy and energetic. Big Sister Ann enrolled in our program, wanting to give back to a child who may have a similar, difficult childhood. Ann’s parents divorced when she was young and she and her siblings navigated ensuing drug use and abuse in their home. Ann’s mother eventually left. Ann and Katie share the experience of an absent mom. Ann is a positive influence while also empathetic to a child with a traumatic background. This lends itself to a longer and stronger match relationship. Katie will benefit from the strong woman that Ann is, as she will provide consistency while also having fun and sharing in Katie's happy energy. When Katie first met Ann they talked non stop and did cart wheels together.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

Annual costs to support one Big-Little match are $1,400. Bigs’ strategic plan includes growing the mentoring programs in Charlevoix and Petoskey to support a greater number of children, thereby allowing for a greater impact in those communities. This will require an increase in financial support from the Char-Em community. The Advisory Council made up of Emmet and Charlevoix County residents and leaders will work alongside Bigs’ Advocacy/Development Specialist to advocate for our mission, increase program awareness, assist with volunteer recruitment and cultivate a support base in the Charlevoix and Emmet communities.
