Project Description:

Scouts BSA Troop 15 is a brand new scout troop for girls in Charlevoix. Girls from Emmet, Charlevoix and surround counties are welcome to join. The troop uses programing created by the Boy Scouts of America specifically for girls that teaches them leadership, outdoor skills, and citizenship. With these funds we plan to purchase the rest of the necessary gear so we can continue camping, and scouting with our current girl members and recruit more members. July 25th the Troop plans to attend a 8 day summer scout camp. We will use the gear all spring and summer to practice for the summer camp, use it at summer camp and continue to use it for campouts for many years to come of these current members and every future member. We will continue to recruit new members ever year and new girls are welcome to join at any time of the year.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

10

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

NA our program serves females only. We may seek teaching from a male expert. For example our girls may work with local fire department and EMS volunteers to learn first Aid skills. But those experts are advising us temporarily and are not considered members.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Any girl between the ages of 10 and 17 years old can join our scout troop. Adults can apply to be volunteers after passing a background check, taking the minimum training and being proved by our charter organization and the scouting district. There are some scholarships available if a scout has need. Our unit will work with the scout and her family to access the available scholarship. Our leaders also seek support from within the community to help scouts who have financial need of support. We were able to gain a scholarship for 4 of our scouts uniforms which cost an average of $130 each. One part of scout is that scouts are taught to pay their own way. So our troop also offers fundraising activities where scouts can work to earn their costs for things like summer camp fees and other needs related to scouting.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

My goal is to take our new troop to Cole Cannoe Base for the first time to summer camp and for the girls to have the gear they need to be successful. While at camp the girls will cook all of their meals, hold patrol meetings to discuss important things, and be self led by their most advanced scout. Its already obvious the difference self leadership is having on the girls as they look to each other to solve problems and for encouragement. I can see the self confidence build as the girls attempt and master new skills. We have had one over night trip at a local cabin with the girls using borrowed gear. They came disorganized and confused on how to care for their own things, blankets were balled up into a pile they left empowered on what to do with the blankets neatly rolled and tied with roe using their first learned knot. Another example is how I have seen the girls grown in confidence using a knife to cut things first nervous to then safely cutting up an apple to share.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Success will be evaluated with the Scoutmaster conference and Board of review process. Each scout has at least one conference with her scoutmaster to discuss her success in scouting, concerns, likes, and dislikes. the board of review is where a board of about 4 adult scout volunteers not leaders in the troop meet with the scout to discuss the scouts progress and success in scouting. They will review the scouts achievements and recommend the scout for advancement for the next scout rank.
Another obvious measure of our success will be on how the scouts are doing at independently using the skills as they master them. If they are able to set up their camp, cook, and preform other necessary scouting tasks as a team with out adult leaders taking over that is success.
