Project Description:
Memories are made every day at your Y Summer Day Camp! Making new friends, learning new skills, understanding more about the natural world and each other is what camp is all about. Campers will be engaged and challenged each week so that they can learn, grow and thrive!
YMCA of Norther Michigan has been offering summer camp for many years, but over the past 5 summers, we have continually expand our offerings. This summer, based on parent requests, we have added an entirely new camp option. Camp Daybreak offers many of the same activities, but has more flexible scheduling. We are also offering expanded Specialty Camp offerings, adding sports camps for the first time ever! Camp Minogi will continue as it has for the past 5 years.
Between all 3 camps, we will serve up to 100 children per day, providing necessary child care, as well as activities focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
200
What percentage are female?
50
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The reason we are seeking this grant is to support our financial assistance program. We never turn anyone away for their inability to pay. Should you decide to fund us again this year, your grant will be earmarked to specifically cover program fees for mothers and girls.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Our financial assistance programs takes into account household income, number of dependents and family expenses. We also consider uncommon or extraordinary expenses such as medical emergencies. Based on the items listed, a family is awarded financial assistance for 12 months. A percentage of their fees for all programs and memberships are then paid by the YMCA.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Summer camp has many benefits. For mothers, camp provides them child care while they work. Sending your child to a YMCA program offers peace of mind that your child is safe and cared for. For young girls, camps is somewhere that they can learn, grow and thrive! Camp is known for helping to build positive self image and worth. The girls are surrounded by positive role models. We work with them to build healthy mind, body and spirit. A benefit for both child and parent is our partnership with Petoskey Public School's to provide free breakfast, lunch and snack all summer long. For moms, that helps with their monthly budget and frees up part of their day since they no longer need to pack lunches. For the girls, it offers delicious and nutritious foods to help them grown. Lastly, camp is employment for 10+ young women. All of our staff are rigorously trained which provides them with skills that will help them in the careers they choose down the road.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Summer camp success is measured in many ways. Some successes are very intangible. The number of smiles we see, how many kids beg to stay at the end of the day instead of going home, how many eyes widen when they get to touch a turtle shell. But more practically, camp is measured in numbers. We will track all registrations and how many of those female registrants and single mothers receive financial assistance. In 2019 we provided $4877 in financial assistance to female campers. An additional $4646 in financial assistance was provided to single mothers. Our numbers in 2019 were a record low, not because we offered less aid, but because fewer families applied. Due to the current world economic situation, I anticipate we will see a rise in the number of families that apply for financial aid.
