Project Description:
Every year, the first week of March, our Model United Nations (MUN) Club travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan to participate in a four-day conference/General Assembly simulation with approximately 400 students and their advisors from around the Midwest. We spend from September through March research issues from our assigned country's perspective, build research binders, write position papers, and develop resolutions to those issues. We have participated in the Mid-American Model United Nations (MAMUN) Conference over the past 14 years and hope to continue.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
15
What percentage are female?
80
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The United Nations is committed to fighting for women's issues so our delegates, both male and female, learn about social justice, sex trafficking and other things from their role in this club. Here is an excerpt from a delegate's speech last March: "Thank you, United Kingdom, for your yield. Indonesia supports the movement to end all sexual exploitation and violence against women. Men, of course, are also affected by this, but in our country and I'm sure many of yours, the victims are primarily women and children. We recently passed an anti-sexual violence bill, which lists forms of sexual violence as criminal offenses. While this is a great step in the right direction, we recognize that enforcement of these laws can be tough. More than 90% of rapes in Indonesia go unreported for fear of victim-blaming or persecution. Laws can only do so much if the system is ineffective at enforcing them. This is why, in addition to a zero-tolerance policy, ... the UN funds special projects that aid in preventing sexual exploitation before it actually happens. A project example like introducing women-only train carriages, which Indonesia has already done." Men and women discuss and solve issues facing women globally.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Participants in our club come from a variety of sources. One source is through their peers who have participated in the past. Students know which of their friends would truly benefit and dive into the research, process, and rigor required for this program. The other avenues include the introduction of our club to high school students during an assembly in the fall. Interested students contact me and join our club. The last way that we find students to participate is through my classes that I teach. Within the first few weeks of classes, I can see students who demonstrate an interest in international issues or are passionate about government so I ask them if they would like to participate. Knowing that Charlevoix, like other communities, has a growing indigent population, I fund raise the entire amount we need to participate in the conference. Some schools have students pay $500 to do so. I would lose a number of my delegates if I were to do the same.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
This program provides students with an experience that is unlike most of what their high school career provides. To prepare for the MUN simulation, schools are given a country or two through a lottery system. This year we were given Russia and the Netherlands. Our student delegates will become experts on issues that their committee assignment dictates. They will spend a year compiling data, analyzing data, writing position papers and resolutions. While at that conference, I witness students growing in self-confidence, building alliances, speaking persuasively, developing strategies to pass amendments on statutes, diving even deeper into complex issues to find agreeable solutions, and negotiating compromise. I witness their frustration with obstacles to their success such as other countries' unwillingness to work together. The experience our students have at MAMUN is as close to real-world as you can get and they thrive in that environment.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
One of the ways I know MAMUN is a good experience is the fact that once students join, they stay with the program through their senior year and they ask for countries that are more difficult to represent (like Russia, for instance.) My junior and seniors, when they are hooked, want to participate in Security Council debates which requires even more preparation than the other committees. Another way that I know our program has had a positive impact on our students is through the networking they do with students from around the Midwest. Life-long friendships are made through their participation in MUN. Lastly, a number of my former MUN delegates have continued with MUN in college and have declared majors in international subjects at their universities.
