Project Description:

Emmet County is experiencing a highly documented crisis due to a lack of affordable housing options with the average cost for a three-bedroom rental at $1,100 per month. This means for a working, single parent living on a low-to-moderate budget, housing is near impossible to find. To combat this complex issue, NMHFH requests $4,000 to aid in the construction of a new, high-quality, energy efficient home for a local single mother household. When completed, Habitat Program Partners purchase the home with an affordable mortgage with up to $20,000 in down payment assistance grants. The most recent family served purchased their home with principle, interest, insurance and taxes of $673 per month. Not only does this program result in the benefits of homeownership, but compared to average apartment costs, it saves a family over $5,000 a year. This savings can be used to establish a savings account, obtain needed health services, fulfill transportation needs, pay for higher education and more.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

3

What percentage are female?

66

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

NMHFH serves all types of households, however, one of the most common demographics we see applying for our program, and the target for this project, is single mothers. We currently have four single-mother households in our program pipeline. At this time, the next household to be served is a mother with two children. She is currently employed at the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. If awarded, this funding would help to establish a home and hope for this woman and her kids, helping her to achieve safety, security and self-sufficiency for the rest of her life. Not only does this project serve the family, but the community as a whole by retaining key employees and increasing the affordable housing stock needed to maintain a thriving community.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

NMHFH is an equal opportunity provider and we follow all state and local fair housing regulations. NMHFH holds Open Enrollment sessions where all interested households may apply for the housing program. Selection for the program is based on screening criteria, which includes financial need. To be eligible, a household must fall between 30-80% of the Area Median Income. A household must also have proof of income that can support monthly mortgage principle, tax, and insurance payments on the home.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Providing women and their children with an affordable and stable home and mortgage changes the trajectory of their lives forever. In addition to an affordable home, our program educates participants on how to become fiscally independent and self-sufficient through financial coaching and credit counseling. It teaches important life lessons such as responsibility, compassion, and leadership. With these skills, and an affordable, safe place to live, they are able to accomplish so much! They are able to appropriately budget expenses and afford basic necessities, becoming less reliant on other social service and government support. They can save and plan for the future. They can utilize this new founded opportunity to succeed academically, excel in the workplace, spend time with their families, maintain healthier lifestyles, and see a better way to live. This “better way” and the lessons learned are then passed on to the next generation, ending the cycle of generational poverty.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

By Summer 2021, a home will be completed for this family, and they will have obtained an affordable mortgage. A survey is administered at 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years after home purchase to track progress and success. Our Program Services Coordinator also stays in contact to provide troubleshooting support as our home buyers settle in to the routine of home ownership.
