Project Description:
Voices Without Borders is seeking scholarship money to assist in covering tuition costs for students inerested in particpating in the Great Lakes Treble and Youth Choirs. In the past, VWB has offered tuition free participation, but choir directors and the board felt the singers needed some financial investment to ensure full participation. The current financial situation in Michigan is making it difficult for families to enroll their children in the GLYC. Tuition cost was a strong factor in parents not enrolling their singer during the 2022-2023 choir season. With a solid scholarship base, VWB could make more monies available to singers/familieswho would like to participate. Ultimately, VWB would like to offer up to half of the tuition as scholarship to those with financial need and thereby remove a barrier to membership in the GLYC. Our goal would be to offer needs based scholarship to at least 5 new Treble choir students and 5 new Youth Choir students for the 2023-2024 season.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
10
What percentage are female?
5
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
VWB's choirs do serve both males and females. Females are more likely to participate in a choir. Presently 75% of our choir members are female.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
All singers receive the Scholarship request form in their welcome packet and the process for scholarship request is explained to all parents. Once the scholarship request has been submitted, it is then reviewed by the scholarship committee. Financial consideration of each applicant is the primary reason for awarding scholarship. VWB would like to be able to award up to half of the tuition cost for the singer with financial needs.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
VWB would like to remove/assist with any financial barrier so that more young girls could participate in the Great Lakes Youth Choirs. Studies have shown there is great value in choir involvement including, but not limited to, a decrease in stress and depression, enhanced brain function, increased discipline and confidence. Singing helps forge social bonds, a sense of belonging, and improved academic performance. Post pandemic reports speak to the high rate of mental health issues and treatment requests especially among school aged children. The comprehensive music program that VWB offers would help to promote all of these positive factors for the students who participate as well as improve their own quality of life. This, is turn, affect their families and schools.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The measure of our success will be determined by the number of singers who participate because VWB is able to provide assistance with tuition.
