Mission Statement:

The mission of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra (GLCO) is to entertain, educate, and inspire through live, professional, community-connected orchestral programming.

GLCO was founded in 2000 by Dr. Pattengale to create an outlet for the community musicians from Emmet and Charlevoix counties. Over the past 23 years, GLCO has grown into an award-winning professional orchestra with 70 musicians and 40 auditioned chorus members reaching thousands of families in our region.

Project Description:

The June 14 concert is a true community collaboration. It will feature over 120 local artists from Emmet and Charlevoix counties ages 7-87.

It is designed to provide an opportunity for generations of local music lovers to connect, to learn, to create music together, and share it with audiences right here at home.

The concert will be performed in John Hall Auditorium in Bay View and will feature 2 masterworks and audience favorites; Carmina Burana by Carl Orff and Organ Symphony by Saint Saens. GLCO's partners for this project include: Bay View Association, GLCO Chorus, Little Traverse Choral Society, and the newly established Great Lakes Children's Choir.

Audience members and artists do not have many opportunities to enjoy these masterworks because they require large forces and major production. Over 120 artists will partner to create this special experience. Carmina Burana was last performed in our community 13 years ago, and our constituents fondly remember it still today.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

850

What percentage are female?

65

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

This concert will leave a long-lasting impact on audiences and participating artists alike.

We estimate to reach about 850 community members with this concert including about 550 women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties. This includes participating artists, children and students, concert goers, and production team.

Over 80 women and girls ages between 7-87 are direct participants in the concert through the Orchestra, GLCO Chorus, Little Traverse Choral Society and Great Lakes Children's Chorus.

For the first time, about 30 children including 20 girls ages 7-14 from the Great Lakes Children's Choir will have a unique opportunity to join the orchestra and 2 adult choirs on stage. The choir was specifically formed for this performance and will be led by the Soprano and area music educator Amy Cross. The community's response to the new children chorus and the interest to join has been excitingly positive. For most of the children this performance will be the very first learning experience of this kind.

The projected cost of the concert is $35,000. GLCO is seeking $4,000 in support of participating women artists and girls in this performance, including the fee for the Soloist and Children's Chorus Director Amy Cross.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Musicians and adult singers are auditioned by the music director and chorusmaster. Children are selected by their chorus director.

The preparation of the singers for the performance of Carmina Burana is a very structured and lengthy process that requires commitment and discipline. Inviting children and students to be a part of the creative process of the professional performance will provide a learning experience for all participants. Professional artists will have an important role to provide a positive nurturing learning experience for the children. Children will have a unique opportunity to work with professional artists in a professional environment that will help them understand the process, learn new skill, boost their self-confidence, and share their talents with the community.

The concert will be a rewarding experience for everyone involved--promoting community spirit and meaningful inter-generational connections, resulting in a beautiful music shared with our communities.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Our goals for this concert go beyond presenting beautiful music. We strive to enrich, entertain, educate, and inspire. By combining missions of several organizations, we are able to reach more people and create a greater impact.

This concert will meet Hestia's mission "to promote economic self-sufficiency and well-being for women and girls" in a myriad of ways. It will:

~Create jobs for over 30 local professional female musicians and artists
~Provide special concert opportunity for 30 community women choristers
~Offer unique learning experience for 20 girls and aspiring singers
~Bring joy and inspiration to over 450 women music lovers in the audience and behind the scenes.

"This June...we(’ll ) do something that has never been done before in our community!... Says Amy Cross, Director of the new Great Lakes Children’s Choir and the GLCO Soloist.

As an elementary teacher, my goal is to provide experiences that demonstrate how music is something that we innately share and that everybody has a part in bringing to life...My hope is that the eyes and hearts of my students will expand as they participate in the intense and rewarding collaborative effort that is essential to pull off this type of masterful feat!" ~Amy Cross.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Performing arts play an essential role in people's well-being and in building a happy and healthy society. GLCO is fortunate to serve in a community that recognizes the importance of music.

Our goal is to protect and foster music in northern Michigan by creating opportunities for music lovers of all ages to learn, create together, and share music with others. This special project will impact many women artists today and help foster future generation of musicians and music lovers through education. GLCO is touched by the incredible interest from our partners, artists, children, and community to join us in this project, which already contributes to its success.

We are grateful to Hestia for considering our request and for supporting the performing arts in our community! ~ GLCO Family
