Project Description:
The emergency kits will help to provide immediate relief to vulnerable people in a time of need. These kits will contain essential hygiene products, diapers, menstrual products, and gas cards to ensure health, mobility, and dignity during times of need. One unexpected event such as job loss, an accident, or natural disasters can set someone back. During these times, basic necessities often become unaffordable or inaccessible. Vulnerable populations including single parents, low-income families, and individuals without stable housing suffer the most. Essential items like hygiene products, diapers, and menstrual supplies are often overlooked in traditional emergency response efforts, despite their importance for health, dignity, and mental well-being. Furthermore, a lack of transportation or funds for fuel can prevent access to jobs, food, medical care, shelters, or other critical services. Emergency kits are meant to lessen the burden for those that are facing difficult situations.

Manna serves all people, but research from the USDA shows that women are more likely to be affected by food insecurity. Food insecure women are more likely to experience chronic health conditions as they are sacrificing their own nutritional needs to support their children. The emergency support kits were developed due to the needs that have been exposed by people seeking assistance. The items that are included in the emergency kits are geared towards women and children.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The Manna Food Project will offer emergency support kits to people seeking food assistance and express a need for other products. Manna staff and volunteers will do a short intake process to evaluate the needs of the person seeking assistance. Manna does not require proof of income or eligibility.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The emergency kits will help lessen the financial burden that women and families are facing. If Manna can provide access to food and emergency kits, then people are empowered to use their financial resources for other necessities, like rent and utilities. The kits will also help to relieve stress and anxiety, improving mental health and hygiene for at-risk populations. By providing gas cards, Manna can help support mobility and access to other services. Ultimately, the emergency kits will provide additional support to individuals until they can achieve self-sufficiency.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The Manna Food Project will record the number of items distributed and the number of people served. We will also track the percentage of the target audience (women and girls). The staff and volunteers will ask for feedback about the program to evaluate the effectiveness of the product distribution.
