Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
During the project year Planned Parenthood of Michigan served a total of 1,330 women and girls.
At our Petoskey health center we served a total of 1,007 females. Of the females served a total of 171 received pap tests to screen for cervical cancer, 199 breast exams were performed to screen for breast cancer, 1,790 birth control cycles were dispensed, 102 women received a long acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) such as an IUD or implant, 304 pregnancy tests were conducted, 19 colposcopy and other biopsy services were provided and 1,351 STI tests were completed. Of the female patients served 379 had incomes at or below 100 percent of the federal poverty level and 203 had incomes between 101 – 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Three hundred and sixty-one patients paid out of pocket for care, 250 relied on Medicaid and 396 had commercial insurance. The majority (45 percent) of females served were ages 20-29. Twenty percent were 19 years old and younger and 34 percent were age 30 and older.
Our comprehensive evidence based sexual health education was provided to 323 girls in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
The original goal: 750 women and girls from Charlevoix and Emmet counties will be served.
Planned Parenthood of Michigan is pleased to share that we met and exceeded our goal for this project and served a total of 1,330 women and girls.
To determine if we met our goal we compared the actual number of women and girls served to the projected goal.
We use electronic health records to track the number of patients served, the services provided, patient income level, age and payment source.
To track the number and demographics of the students served Planned Parenthood uses a software system that tracks students by session title, date, county, number of sessions and gender identity.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Many sexual health education programs are based on the assumption that all participants are heterosexual. This assumption leads to the exclusion of information that is important to the health and well-being of individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. Planned Parenthood of Michigan is committed to providing sexual health information that includes everyone and intentionally provides information for LGBTQ+ youth. As a result of including information for LGBTQ+ youth an East Jordan 9th grader shared that “sexuality doesn’t change sex”. This comment was made in response to many students making assumptions and comments about sexual orientation and gender identify. These assumptions put LGBTQ+ youth at greater risk for STIs and pregnancy and make LGBTQ+ students feel left behind in sexual health education classes. It is the goal of our education programs to make sure students who identify as LGBTQ+ have information specific to their needs too.
A Charlevoix student shared that the most important thing I learned in class was the different STI's. I learned what they can do to your body and how it is important to know what you are doing. I also learned the symptoms and what causes them.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Providing reproductive health care, family planning services and comprehensive sexual health education to women and girls is the foundation of our mission. To fund our services we rely on reimbursements from patients with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and fundraising through individual contributions and grant awards.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The grant award from the Hestia Women's Giving Circle was publicized in Planned Parenthood of Michigan's Statewide Education newsletter and patients who received financial assistance for their care were informed that their care was made possible through the Hestia Women's Giving Circle.
Summary Comments
Support from the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle plays a very important role in Planned Parenthood’s ability to provide women and girls in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties with reproductive health care and comprehensive sexuality education. Hestia’s generosity has made it possible for uninsured and underinsured women to receive annual exams that help detect breast and cervical cancer, access birth control, and menopause services. Hestia’s support helps to provide girls and young women with age appropriate education about their bodies, puberty, sexual identity and relationships. Thank you for being our partner as we work together for the health and well-being of women and girls in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties!
