Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
We had more students registering to attend each Friday than we had expected. Over 110 students shopped with approximately 55 girls. Harbor Springs asked us to include their 5th grade Free Lunch and Reduced Cost Lunch students, which we did. Most of our attendees also are helping younger siblings.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
We do not advertise with posters throughout the schools due to not wanting to stigmatize negativity about being hungry and coping with food insecurity. Most of our students come by word of mouth from friends who attend a Youth Pantry, a counselor or teacher. On Friday morning announcements there is a simple announcement stating that "The Northmen Den is open today during Lunch." Some Fridays we would have over 65 middle schools at the Petoskey Middle School Northmen Den. The middle school counselors tell us that their young middle school Northmen Den students go into a panic mode if they believe the Den won't be open. Unfortunately, since the schools are closed earlier than expected, we could not survey the students about how we helped them and their families or help our Senior girls to visit North Central Community College this spring. We provided 75 bags of food from our 2 Petoskey Dens when the schools closed down due to the COVD pandemic. Our Dens shelves are totally empty.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
The PHS Den has two entrances - one through the hallway and the other through the Library. Several students found they could sneak into the Den through the library to take food that they really did not need. They just wanted to hurt the Den students. Two of our Den girls came to tell us that they confronted a few students (right in their faces with fists drawn) about them stealing food and toiletries from students who need it! These two girls both told us that the Den was vital to have enough food. One explained that her younger sister had a list of food or toiletries to get from her MS Den and that she had another list to get from the HS Den. Their Mother didn't want them to take more than they needed. These two girls have been Den attendees since middle school. They both plan to attend college due to our volunteers' mentoring. Many of our HS girls enjoy eating lunch with us while sharing what's going on in their lives. We also have helped two girls whose stepmother/stepfather would not share their food with them. These two girls have access to the Den with a counselor's guidance to get as much food on any given day when needed.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Writing more grants and having our 2nd Annual HUNGER HURTS fundraising campaign. To keep it as a 100% Volunteer organization. Our Director is even a volunteer!
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
Now that we have our HUNGER HURTS Newsletter, we will have an article in our June issue. Also, we tell our church members and other businesses about the grant we received from Hestia Giving Circle. Hestia was mentioned as a Donor in our September 2019 Hunger Hurts campaign. We are working on a website where there will be a page to acknowledge Donors.
Summary Comments
Thank you for all your help. Words can't express the good Hestia is doing for our young middle and high school girls. Please come and visit on a Friday to actually feel the joyful and appreciative smiles from the students who shop at the Northmen Dens, Harbor Hut and Lakeview Locker.
