Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
It is difficult to measure growth in qualities like confidence, perseverance and integrity. The best we can do is watch our Girls Golf alums go on to win Regional and State high school golf championships, become First Tee Girls Golf coaches who mentor the next generation, earn college scholarships for golf, and give back to their communities as adults in many different roles. This is one of the first places where powerful young girls are encouraged to flex their muscles and become powerful women.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Meet Sara Hasse, a current (2019-2020) Petoskey 7th grader. Last spring, Sara learned about the Petoskey Connecting Women in Business GO Grants for Girls. Because of her previous four years in our Girls Golf program, Sara, on her own initiative, applied for and received a $400 grant to support her passion for learning golf at the First Tee. In 2019, she participated in Girls Golf, Birdie classes and the inaugural PGA Jr. League competitive golf program. Sara was also one of our keynote speakers at the donor reception we host every spring, giving her even more opportunity to stretch her skills into public speaking. She was 12 years old at the time, and impressed the assembled group with her poise, passion and thoughtful observations. We applaud her initiative, courage, dedication to the sport and willingness to take risks and try new things. She represents the best of what Girls Golf can do for young women in our community.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
The First Tee of Northern Michigan is 100% committed to giving girls the opportunity to learn and succeed together. As with all our First Tee programs, it will be 90% funded from charitable support, and 10% (or less) funded from participant fees.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
We usually mail a Report of Donors in March of the following year (in this case, 2020) to publicly thank and acknowledge all our donors for the previous year (2019). However, we cancelled this publication in March 2020 due to uncertainty about our financial situation during the pandemic.
Summary Comments
Thank you so very much for your ongoing support of Girls Golf. We are very proud of the young women who have attended this program over the last 12 years, and you should be proud of them too!
