Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

We facilitated two overnight trips, as planned. Our trip in October 2019 had four girls participate, and our trip in March 2020 had three girls attend. All were students attending Lakeview Academy.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

The participants completed pre and post surveys for the trips to help us plan meaningful activities and conversations, as well as give us feedback on how the overnights impacted them. Our goals were to increase trust and relationships with staff, as well as among the girls. We also hoped to increase their feelings of self worth and healthy coping skills, and expose them to new experiences. Based on their anecdotal responses, the overnights were a success in all areas. The girls identified goals for their future, and strengths they saw in themselves, and in the group, that will help them reach their goals.
Each participant said they liked everything about the trip - other than the outhouse and the cold. Specifically, they liked:
"spending quality time with peers and getting to know people better, and just being close to the woods"
"it was fun doing different activties, and staying in a rustic cabin"
"the adventure, giggles and laughs"
When asked how their strengths will help them meet their goals:
"because I learned I can do it if I try"
"the will help me succeed"
"being honest...and staying strong"

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

Each student took away a new experience or strengthened relationship from the overnight. Supportive, healthy relationships like the ones formed on these trips are often lacking our students' lives. Building these connections helps students become more engaged in school and programming.
When asked the best memories they would take away from this outing:
"having fun without electricity in the rustic cabin"
"friendship and walking on the beach"
"spending time with new friends"
"nature photography and walking through the woods"
"too many to pick from!"

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

At this time, we are not planning any future overnights due to Covid-19. We will gradually introduce gender based programming for our students as restrictions are lessened, and we can safely do so. Girls group sessions will continue, and then if/when we are safely able to have an overnight in the next year, we will seek funding from other organizations. At this time, the future is too unclear to make that committment.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

We will be providing information about the grant and overnights to Emmet County to share in an upcoming newsletter.

Summary Comments

Because of your generous support, we were able to facitlitate two successful overnights this school year. Both were impactful experiences for the students and staff that attended. We explored outside, had meaningful conversations, played games, created dream catchers or learned nature photography, discussed goals & ideas, and brainstormed solutions to problems they are facing as young women. The girls were kind to one another, worked together to cook and create, and genuinely enjoyed the experiences (except for the outhouse.) The time away from electronics to enjoy nature, good conversation and fun games was beneficial for everyone who attended.
When asked what they learned about others on this trip:
"they are funny, and willing to do stuff, and they listen to what people have to say"
"they are kind, funny and caring"
"I learned more about everybody and how nice & fun everyone is"
"they are caring and understanding"

*With $98 of unused funds, we would like to utilize this money to do a follow up activity with some of the students who attended the trips, with a deadline of September 1, 2020. Please let me know if this is approved, or if you would like the $98 reimbursed to you.
