Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
28 Girls were tutored a total of 164 hours over summer and fall. We also had 7 women tutoring them through out this time period.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
While our program was cut back by 2/3rds due to the pandemic, we were still able to tutor. We did host some of our tutoring online, but really found that inperson works better for most of the kids. We utilized the library outdoor area for tutoring in the summer and then in door for fall. We ended slightly early and took a long break. The schools did not do the testing, due to Covid, so we do not have the statistical numbers we had hoped for, but anecdotatlly we did hear from parents and tutors that the program was making a difference. We plan to continue the tutoring portion of the program, in person beginning in February. We hope that the schools will resume their tetsting protocols, but if they do not, we will gather anecdotal information again and plan for the next year.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
When my oldest daughter was in first grade, I thought she was doing well in school, especially with reading. She was reading at home just fine. Then the end of first grade came and the realization my daughter was not where she needed to be with reading. In addition I learned about the third grade reading law. I started to panic. After inquiring about assistance for children who struggle with reading, I discovered the Growing Readers Together Program. From that day forward my life changed and so did my daughters. She was paired with a very kind retired school teacher who began setting up building blocks that are essential to reading. We even participated in family nights once a month that allowed children to learn about a specific topic and have the opportunity to bring home kits that made reading and learning fun.
My daughter is now a fourth grader at Sheridan Elementary and I would like to share with you what I recently received from her teacher.
“She is a very fluent and expressive reader. I really enjoy reading her writing! She has great ideas and she brings her characters to life!” If my daughter had not received the extra help she would not be where she is today.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
We have found that this program is extremely successful and hope to continue until there is no longer a need. I am planning to write a large scale grant to help with funding into the future.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
We sent a press release to the PNR and the Harbor Light. We also included the information in our quarterly newsletter and weekly eNews. We also posted to our FB page.
