Our usual remaining inventory for layettes in the past years was always in the single digits. In 2020, our remaining inventory (out of 450 total layettes) was 256. The Health Department RN's were unable to provide face to face interaction in the clinic or home setting due to COVID-19. The only distribution was if the mothers traveled to the health department. Limited pre-post-natal education occurred compared to past years. The projected distribution of layettes for 2021 will remain at 450 with a 5-county radius.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

We send a formal query for feedback regarding the quality of our layettes and ask for suggestions for improvements (some of the improvements include the baby thermometer, baby nail clippers, and baby toothbrush). We switched from inexpensive diaper bags to canvas totes as a result of feedback from the health departments RN's (“young moms like a diaper bag that looks like a purse”). Here are some examples of comments:
“Moms love the handmade burp cloths, blankets” and knitted hats”
“It is a relief when they receive the layettes because most of them have very little. They are grateful.”
“The sleep sacks are GREAT!! This items opens up a conversation about safe sleep."
“The moms are always surprised and excited to receive a layette.”

CCSNM has been distributing layettes for over 37 years. Over the years new items have been added that increases the expense. We have been able to do this by community grants and generous donors. Our 2020 fundraiser was canceled due to COVID-19 and we relied on generous donors such as Hestia. Our 2021 fundraiser in scheduled in August but it's not clear if the event will be allowed. We do anticipate assembling 450 layettes this year.

Summary Comments
Christ Child Society of Northern Michigan volunteers would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your generous donation. We are a small chapter with ALL volunteers and NO paid staff. Volunteers spend hours in ordering, assembling the layettes and writing grants to partially fund our "Layette Project."
