Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
When COVID-19 forced schools to close in the spring of 2020, Manna continued to provide “Food 4 Kids” backpacks to schools able to get them in the hands of at-risk students, including to 90 elementary and preschool students (45-50 of whom were girls) in Charlevoix. Most were picked up by parents as part of a continuing lunch program. In some cases, requests for backpacks increased, and they were provided to older children as well. We also stretched our budget to provide more food in each backpack: a 100 percent juice box, eight fruit and grain bars, a high protein meat stick, a cheddar cheese stick, two cereal servings, applesauce or peaches, and a box of macaroni & cheese for the whole family. The cost of each backpack quickly grew to $4.24. However, school COVID-19 protocols did not allow for their volunteers to add fresh fruits to those backpacks, so the goal of the project was not met .
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Due to the increased risk of spreading COVID-19, Charlevoix and Beaver Island schools restricted access to academic buildings, preventing volunteers and others from adding apples and oranges to each backpack. Therefore, we did not spend Hestia’s $2,000 grant during the 2020-21 school year.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
While we have several stories of the value of the "Food 4 Kids" Backpack program and the desire of other communities to implement a similar effort of adding fresh fruits, we do not have a story to share regarding this grant project.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
While COVID-19 interrupted our fresh fruit program this past school year, follow-up conversations between our Charlevoix organizers and partner schools have shown an enthusiastic commitment to resume the program for the 2021-22 school year. Everyone involved in the program realizes the tremendous value of fresh fruits for kids. We are confident that this program will be resumed in some way in the near future, and we hope it can be expanded to reflect the growing, nationwide support of fresh foods for kids.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.

Summary Comments
Manna recognizes that the outcomes of this project are disappointing, and we are fully prepared to return your entire grant amount of $2,000. However, we sincerely hope that you will allow us to apply these funds forward in support of the fresh fruit initiative for the Charlevoix and Beaver Island at-risk students this coming school year.
[NOTE: The budget form would not submit without "Total Actual Revenues line must equal Total Actual Expenses line." To be clear, we received $2,000 and spent $0.]
