How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
Despite all of the challenges of 2020, we were able to offer summer camp to more than 50 girls. We provided $7113 in financial assistance this summer. 91% of that was provided to single mothers. Of the remaining 9%, 5% was awarded to girls.

We were able to provide financial assistance to every single person who asked for it in 2020. Many families had experienced extra hardships due to the unavailability of childcare forcing someone to stay home while school was out of session or virtual. Summer camp provided these families the much needed support to reenter the workforce.
We increased our maximum Financial Assistance in 2020 to 60%. That meant our families paid as little as $1.07 per hour for child care.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

This year was a doozie. One of the most striking differences I recognized was the increase of fights between campers. Their little souls were so burdened that the slightest disagreement could come to blows. As the summer went on, I watched those fights dwindle. We had helped the campers regain the social emotional awareness they had lost in isolation. We worked with them on conflict resolution and how to use their words or walk away when upset. I have no doubt that we prevented suspension or expulsion from school having given our kids those 8 weeks to remember how to interact with their peers.
On a sperate note, I cannot tell you how many parents were grateful that we offered summer camp. Whether it allowed them to get back to work, or just gave their child a healthy outlet, they were ecstatic to be with us. Parents were in a total bind with the lack of options available. They had peace of mind that their child was safe and cared for with the YMCA.

This program is largely self sustaining. It has grown significantly every year since it was reinvented in 2016. We do continue to seek grant opportunities so we are able to offer the highest quality program at the lowest possible participant fee.

Our Hestia award was recognized on social media as well as in newsletters and board communications. Hestia is listed as a partner in summer camp.

As a small nonprofit, YMCA of Northern Michigan is grateful for every dollar we receive. Hestia has supported us for as long as I have been working for YNM and it means the world to us. Your contributions truly impact the lives of women and girls and I applaud your efforts. I look forward to the potential of attending your award event again this year.
