Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

The impact of this grant award made it possible for Planned Parenthood of Michigan to serve 995 women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties at our Petoskey health center.

To ensure access to reproductive health care, 584 women received care. Of the women served 152 had incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, 228 women paid for a portion of their care out-of-pocket, and 184 relied on Medicaid. To screen for cancer 54 women received Pap tests and 55 women received breast exams, and 13 women received colposcopy services as follow-up care to an abnormal pap test. Forty-nine women received a long acting reversible method of contraception, 672 cycles of birth control were dispensed, 558 STI tests were provided and 168 women received pregnancy tests. Abortion care was provided to 98 women who wanted to end their pregnancy.

Our education team reached a total of 411 female youth who received information on healthy relationships, consent, STIs/HIV prevention, and contraception. We were able to accomplish this by pivoting in person programs to a virtual platform. We also delivered safer sex kits and feminine hygiene supplies to our partners in the community.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

Yes, Planned Parenthood of Michigan met and exceeded the goal of this grant by serving 995 women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties.

We know that we met our goal because we use electronic health records (EHR) to track the number of patients served. EHR allows us to input the gender and race identity of our patients, their address information, method of payment, insurance status and the services provided.

To track the number and demographics of the students served Planned Parenthood uses a software system that tracks students by session title, date, county, number of sessions and gender identity.

The timeframe for this grant is October 1, 2020 - September 30, 2021. By the end of March we met the goals of the grant. The proposed and actual revenue and expenses reflect the timeframe of October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. This year our fiscal year will change and start July 1, 2021 and end June 30, 2022.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

A 38 year old women came in for birth control to hopefully stop her bleeding between periods and after sex. Our Clinician, Shelley, felt something was not right and of course insisted on doing a Pap, pelvic and STI screen, as this bleeding sounded suspicious. The patient was uninsured and made too much money to be eligible for Medicaid. Because of this she was hesitant to get testing due to cost but with Planned Parenthood’s sliding fee scale, was willing to get the care she needed. The patient’s Pap test came back suspicious for cancer. Working with the patient, the Petoskey health center team was able to get her colposcopy and biopsy covered by the Health Department’s Breast Cervical Cancer Control National Program (BCCCNP) and the biopsy confirmed cervical cancer. Due to the fact that she qualified for BCCCNP, the seriousness of her biopsy then allowed her to qualify for Medicaid for treatment. She is now under the care of a GYN Oncologist.

Funding from the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle made it possible for the Petoskey health center’s team to take the extra time to coordinate the care of our patient and funded the remaining costs that the patient could not cover.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

Providing reproductive health care, family planning services and comprehensive sexual health education to women and girls is the foundation of our mission. To fund our services we rely on reimbursements from patients with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and fundraising through individual contributions and grant awards.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

The grant award from the Hestia Women's Giving Circle was publicized in Planned Parenthood of Michigan's Statewide Education newsletter and patients who received financial assistance for their care were informed that their care was made possible in part through the Hestia Women's Giving Circle.

Summary Comments

Providing reproductive health care and sexual health education to women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties during a global pandemic is challenging. This did not stop the Petoskey health center team who put the needs of the individuals we serve first, to ensure reproductive health care was provided no matter what.

To keep patients and staff safe, we provide low-touch visits, supply all staff and patients with PPE and we rely on new technology for education programs and some health care services.

We learned that the majority of our patients continue to come to the Petoskey health center for their care and our community partners still prefer to see us in-person because of the trust, commitment and long standing relationship the Petoskey health center team has with our patients, young people and the community.

Our ability to provide reproductive health care and education to women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties was made possible by the unwavering commitment we received from the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle, individual donors and local foundations. This past year was difficult for everyone and we thank you for helping us make it through this time!
