Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
We had five families apply for scholarships for the Blackbird Childcare Center and The Harborage daycare center. In all, five mothers (women) and six girls benefitted from the scholarship funds. Four boys also benefitted from the funds.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Although there was no formal evaluation completed, these families were able to access high quality childcare services at our centers. Without the scholarship assistance, they most likely would have terminated their childcare. This would have also effected their ability to work.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
These snippets are taken right from applications for scholarship that demonstrate the need and how these funds make a difference:
"Short term- we hope that we will be caught up with our payments and credit lines by this January, as long as the COVID situation does not restrict our work further. That plus my unpaid maternity leave and the gap between my paychecks in August was a perfect storm of circumstances. It is possible that my husband may go down state for a VA program for 45 days this Fall, which will limit his ability to work during that time. We are in desperate need of assistance. Thank you for considering!"
"I can't go back to work until I have child care and I'm not receiving unemployment anymore. I've tried to find someone who is at home to watch my children but can't find anyone I trust. My fiance, their dad, just started working for himself and can't watch them because if he gets a call for a job he needs to be able to take the job immediately. We've had little to no income for the past 7 weeks. Please help us!"
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
We are fortunate to have a few major donors, such as Hestia, that realize the importance of quality childcare and making scholarship funds accessible to families. We have a relatively good balance in our scholarship account that should carry us a couple of years. However, unless we get regular annual donations, our fund could be in jeopardy - depending on how many requests we get for scholarships. It is hard to project what our economy will be be like and its impact on our families that need childcare.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The scholarship fund is explicitly mentioned in our childcare registration material. Additionally, all donors (including Hestia Women's Giving Circle) are publicized on our childcare website as are the scholarship applications: http://harborps.org/schools/blackbird-elementary/childcare-center/
Summary Comments
We are incredibly grateful to Hestia for their generous grant to our childcare scholarship fund. These funds are easily accessible to families and directly eliminate the major barrier to quality childcare: expense. Thank you so much for helping to make childcare available to everyone in our community!
