We met our main goal of getting this free program going for our community. There were some places that we ended up falling short though. To start with the positives: We were able to run two sessions, one November through February and one currently running February through May. We had 10 participants the first session and 9 (with an additional 2 coming to try it out to see if they were interested) for the second session. This almost reached our capacity of 12 per class. However, our goal was to run 2 different classes each session, but we just didn't have the interest from the 6th-12th graders to justify running one. For the second session we ended up combining both 3rd-5th and 6th-12th to serve both at the same time because we had 2 older students interested and wanted to be able to serve them. Once we get more interest in the program from the older girls we hope to run two classes for each session.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
I don't have a specific story that comes to mind but we heard from many parents at pickup that they were so excited to see a free program for their child to participate in. It was amazing seeing the girls start to grasp the concepts of coding and create amazing games, animations, and stories using their new knowledge. It's a bit too early to tell if we helped get any of them into a STEM career, but we cannot wait to hear from them in the future.

We hope to be able to continue this program again next school year as long as we have the interest and a staff member to take it on. The biggest expense was the initial cost of purchasing laptops for the girls to work on and renting the space to use. Now that we have the laptops we no longer have to worry about that expense. We were also graciously donated classrooms to use in at NCMC to run the programs in both sessions so we did not have rent expense. We hope to continue working with our community partners to find space available to run the program and we plan to absorb the cost of staff wages for the program to continue.

We would not have been able to get this program going without the support from your group, it was a project over a year in the making. We are so thankful for your contribution to opening the world of STEM to the young girls in our community. We hope to continue to open this door to more girls as the program continues to grow.
