Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

To Date: Fall:32 girls, 180 hours of tutoring. Winter to Date 36 girls, 132 sessions of tutoring. (still have 10 weeks of tutoring and final surveys). Anticipate those 38 girls will receive another 320 sessions of tutoring. Girls make up 58% of our current enrollment. A session is 45 minutes, on-on-one, tutoring. A total of 75 K-3 graders have been or are currently in our tutoring program.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

1. 80% of 3rd graders are eligivle for grade 4.
a. We have reached 75 students today, 58% are female.
b. Family literacy nights: We hosted our first session in February with two families and one March session had 8 families in attendance. We are providing a pizza meal with veggies and cookies. Brain Boxes - have a total circulation of 41. We provided two parent sessions about the brain boxes, and hope to include more of that in one upcoming parent tours. We will be creating four more Brain Boxes to include in our collection.
2. 80% of parents increase their usage of the library.
a. Clean slate cards provided: 32% of respondents to date have received a clean slate card. 82% of respondents stated they are more comfortable in library and 53% of them have increased their usage. 85% of the respondents stated their children are more comfortable in the library and 82% of the respondents stated their children's usage has increased.
b. I have provided two parent tours with two more planned.
c. Monthly reminders - email is not the best tool for reaching parents. We will switch to a small flyer.
d. Circulation of children's materials has gone up 33% since Oct when tutoring began.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

A tutor shared that Khloe's reading has improved, but she is now excited about the library in general. She and her dad typcally arrive early so she can explore all the resources in the children's department and she always asks him to check out a book. Her newfound excitement about libraries and reading will certainly contribute to her being a stronger reader.
A parent shared that prior to the tutoring program her 2nd grader was well behind grade level with his reading skills. Everyday was a tear-filled battle before school and he required a special reading program. Since starting the tutoring program we have witnessed him grow tremendously. School is no longer a battle. He smiles, he laughs, and recently tested at the grade level mean on the NWEA test. This program has given him a bright future. Thank you so much!
Another parent stated: Since starting tutoring my son reads every billboard and street sign. He is especially excited about the street with his name we found in Boyne City.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

Of course the ultimate goal of the program is to not be needed. But that seems to not be in our very near future. We plan to ask for another year of funding from our current grantors. We also plan to help extend our dollars by putting stricter guidelines on student eligibility.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

A Press Release went out as soon as we were awarded the funding. We also posted to our social media. Hestia logo is listed on any internal posters or printed signage.
