Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

Planned Parenthood of Michigan’s Reproductive Equity and Education for Women and Girls started July 1, 2022 and concludes June 30, 2023. Our goal is to serve 750 women and girls.

As of February 28, 2023 we have served a total of 556 women and girls in Charlevoix and Emmet counties.

At the Petoskey health center we provided care to 409 women from Charlevoix and Emmet counties who experience incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.

Services provided are as follows: 65 breast exams, 74 pap tests, 87 patients received long acting reversible contraception such as IUD and subdermal implants, 718 cycles of birth control and 6 emergency contraception pills have been dispensed, we provided 161 pregnancy tests, 9 colposcopies and other biopsy services, and 148 medication abortions. We also provided real time care (telehealth) services to 14 women.

The Petoskey educator reached 147 girls and women through 46 education sessions delivered to 7th, 9th and 11th grade levels as well as to youth with Substance Use Disorder and through our collaboration with the Women’s Resource Center of Northwest Michigan.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

Planned Parenthood of Michigan will meet the program goals of the Reproductive Equity and Education for Women and Girls project by June 30, 2023.

To determine if we are able to meet our program goals we calculated the monthly number of female patients and students served from July – February. Based on serving 69 women and girls per month and knowing that we have education sessions scheduled and patients booking appointments at the Petoskey health center through June, we estimate that we will serve at least 800 women and girls in Charlevoix and Emmet counties by the end of our project.

Planned Parenthood tracks the number of medical patients served using its electronic health records and uses a database to record the number of education participants served. Both databases allow us to record demographic information based on gender, age, county, zip code and type of service received or education program. Our electronic medical records also allow us to record the income level of our patients.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

Planned Parenthood of Michigan is committed to providing non-judgmental care and education to all of our patients. This is important as many of our patients who turn to us for care are in difficult situations where they feel in danger or experience stigma for seeking the care they need.

One of our patients recently left an abusive relationship and was still on her partners insurance. When she came to PPMI’s Petoskey health center she shared that she was having symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection (STI). She asked if she could be tested and if necessary treated without using her partners insurance for fear he would find out and be outraged. Our Clinician assured the patient that we would not bill her insurance. The patient was able to pay for a portion of her care, however she needed additional resources. With support from Hestia, we were able to cover the remaining cost of her care and avoided billing her insurance out of concern for her safety. She was grateful and relieved to know that her ex-partner would not find out that she took care of her sexual and reproductive health.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

Providing reproductive health care, family planning services and comprehensive sexual health education to women and girls is the foundation of our mission. To fund our services we rely on reimbursements from patients with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and fundraising through individual contributions and grant awards.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

The grant award from the Hestia Women's Giving Circle was publicized in Planned Parenthood of Michigan's Statewide Education newsletter and patients who received financial assistance for their care at the Petoskey health center were informed that their care was made possible in part through the Hestia Women's Giving Circle.

Summary Comments

The care our patients receive at the Petoskey health center is always high-quality, patient-centered, compassionate and confidential. With the philanthropic support provided from Hestia, individuals and other area foundations we are able to provide care to many of our patients who experience low-incomes and need additional resources. We are also able to serve as an advocate for our patients so that they receive the care they need and deserve. Planned Parenthood of Michigan is grateful for the work of the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle in the community and we are honored to have your commitment to our mission in support of women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties.

Please note that the budget below reflects the timeframe of July 1, 2022 – February 28, 2023 for eight months of our annual operating budget for this project.

If you would like the final numbers of women and girls served at the official end of our project please contact me and I would be happy to provide a final report. Respectfully, Janet Carbonneau-Jones.
