Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
13 Girls attended AIM Tutoring, with ten Middle School girls and 3 High School girls—total 25 students, counting boys. Our tutoring schedule was after-school and out of school at our three tutoring classrooms. All the girls saw their tutor once a week, one-to-one and face-to-face. All students had healthy after-school snacks if they wanted them (which all did), and all received a Jimmy John sandwich of their choice as a Dinner-To-Go after their session ended.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
We had no parents wanting to pay for tutoring, so, we lost that crucial revenue. We learned that finding donors wanting to give to tutoring is difficult. For example, two grants totaling $10,000 both chose having their donations go to our youth pantries rather than tutoring. Thus, we couldn't offer a 6 - 7 p.m. tutoring session or add Monday to the schedule. We need to educate our communities how tutoring is vital in helping our neediest students achieve good grades and gives the students confidence to attend vocational, college, or job internships after high school. The other barrier is transportation for the students. It's within walking distance or bus for Petoskey students. Alanson and Harbor Springs parents want to have their child attend but need transportation to AIM and back home. Students missed their session because parent(s) needed to work late, & there was no way to pick up their child. Both barriers can be corrected if our communities realize the importance of our Free Tutoring program especially for our most neediest girls.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
We have several, but the two from our girls are the following:
One high school girl told her tutor she was thankful for having her help in understanding algebra. Before she started coming, she felt like she was "drowning" and didn't know how to tell anyone. Everyone understood everything but her. All the assignments were happening so fast! Thanks to you, you have shown me how to slow down my mind and that math is just a puzzle, and that's all. It's okay that I don't see numbers quickly, but I do see words, for I love to write. I love words! So, her math tutor listened and had her begin writing a journal!
Another girl's mother called me a few weeks ago, asking if her daughter could add another day because she loves coming since it's so much fun and she's meeting friends, and before AIM, she was lonely with nothing today after school. This young girl is from an upper-class family and is not in sports or clubs. Northmen Den Youth Services dream is to have a YOUTH CENTER with fun, engaging activities for ALL Emmet County middle and high school students, plus tutoring and counseling.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Listening to our AIM students and watching them grow in self-confidence, we believe in this program even more than the day we began writing the curriculum, policies, and guidelines for it only two short years ago. We need to find donors, foundations, and grants who believe in the importance tutors can provide to students who need one on one teaching rather than in a large classroom.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The Hestia Giving Circle was mentioned as a sponsor when Kathy spoke to groups about AIM and was included in our May newsletter with your logo as an AIM sponsor. It's also mentioned in our upcoming Annual Report.
Summary Comments
Thank you for believing in us and providing funding and encouragement to help our young girls grow in confidence, empathy, and gratitude. There is much to do, but we are meeting the challenge thanks to the Hestia Giving Circle.
