Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
This program was a huge success for our students and audience alike. The CTAC School of Ballet students achieved new levels of movement composition by creating dances specifically for the camera. Having the students dance in front of greenscreen and then on open meadows at Angell Farm put into perspective the need for versatility in dance. Working with video projections on a scrim provided the students with a whole new skill set of technical production duties and a more enhanced performance quality. Being a part of this multimedia process allowed them to discover an array of career paths available within dance. As a result, our young women realized the promising future in store for them in the arts.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Our November Fall for Dance performance that featured Peter Sparling's screendance was the largest attended Fall for Dance performance in our history. The community delighted in the sharing of this work, thoroughly in awe of how the students evolved as dance artists within a few short months.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
As we have continued through the school year, our students have remarked on the deep impact this program made on their artistry and larger career goals. This spring, three of our student’s choreographic works were accepted to the Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival in Kalamazoo, two of which were screendance works. The quality of work the students were able to produce would not have been possible without taking part in the Sparling residency, to which they gained insight on dance for camera techniques. Additionally, two of our female students will be attending alternative dance intensive programs this summer. Their pursuit for these types of programs, followed by their acceptances exemplify the impact that the Sparling residency has made on our students.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
This specific project concluded last fall, as the intention was for it to only be performed once during the Fall for Dance production. However, the CTAC School of Ballet plans to work with Sparling again to create an entirely new work based within the same concepts of the Motion Pictures Project. The insight gained from this project was incredibly valuable to the students and will continue to benefit their future careers the more frequently they engage in similar processes.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The grant was publicized in the Fall of Dance program and over various marketing platforms used to publicize the performance including our website, Facebook and Youtube. Hestia Women's Giving Circle will also be listed in the CTAC Annual Report.
Summary Comments

This gift has not only empowered girls/women by providing new opportunities to learn from luminaries in the dance world, it also broadened their leadership and problem-solving skills that will, ultimately, prepare them for higher education and future careers.
