Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
A total of 655 women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties were served.
Vital cancer screenings were provided through 40 breast exams and 45 Pap tests. Upholding the family planning goals of patient seeking a method of contraception, 13 patients received an IUD, 13 received subdermal implants and a total of 334 cycles of other birth control were dispensed. Twenty-nine women received access to medication abortion care. Caring for the sexual health of patients, 613 STI tests and 112 HIV tests were provided. Using telehealth care we connected 24 women to care when and where they needed it. Nearly half of all patients served at the Petoskey health center experienced incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level and needed financial assistance for their care.
Sustaining the long-standing school-based sexual health education programs in East Jordan and Charlevoix Public Schools, 100 females, grades 9 – 12 received sexual health education.
Collaborating with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, our Petoskey Educator trained 60 school-based health care providers on how to provide inclusive, affirming health care to LGBTQAI+ youth.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Using our electronic health records Planned Parenthood of Michigan tracks the number of patients served, the type of service provided, gender and income level. Our goal was to provide sexual and reproductive health care and education to 750 women and girls for the timeframe of July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024. As of February 29, 2024, we have served 655 women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties. During the next four months of this program year, we are confident that we will exceed our program goal.
To measure the impact of our comprehensive sexuality education programs, we record participant information in our education database where we collect and record the gender of students served, the session location and the program topic.
We also rely on patient satisfaction surveys and pre and post tests provided to education participants to measure if their knowledge about a subject or has changed / increased.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Recently, a young woman walked into the Petoskey health center in tears due to the extreme pain she was experiencing in her pelvic area. She asked if she could be seen for symptoms of what she thought was a urinary tract infection (UTI). The patient explained to the Health Center Manager that she is uninsured and has no other means to pay for her care until her next paycheck.
The Petoskey Health Center Team reassured the patient that her health and well-being was their top priority regardless of her financial situation, and immediately triaged care.
After a thorough exam and testing for a UTI and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it was discovered that the patient had an STI. The STI, chlamydia, was the cause of her pain. If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious infections and even infertility. Fortunately, chlamydia is usually easy to cure with medicine if it is detected early.
After diagnosing the patient, the Petoskey Clinician sent a prescription to a pharmacy after researching to see which one had the lowest cost for the patient’s medication. Support from the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle made it possible for this patient to receive the care she required.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Providing reproductive health care, family planning services and comprehensive sexual health education to women and girls is the foundation of our mission. To fund our services, we rely on reimbursements from patients with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and fundraising through individual contributions and grant awards.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The grant award from the Hestia Women's Giving Circle was publicized in Planned Parenthood of Michigan's Education newsletter and patients who received financial assistance for their care at the Petoskey health center were informed that their care was made possible in part through the Hestia Women's Giving Circle.
Summary Comments
On behalf of the women and girls served in Charlevoix and Emmet counties, thank you for the generous support Planned Parenthood of Michigan received from the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle.
At the Petoskey health center, Planned Parenthood provides sexual and reproductive health care and education to more than 1,200 people annually. The majority (90 percent) of our patients are female and are ages 20-29. Half of our patients qualify for and rely on financial assistance for their care. Our education programs are provided at no cost to schools and community groups.
With support from the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle, Planned Parenthood was able to meet the sexual and reproductive health care needs of women and girls by ensuring that they received access to health care that is equitable, non-judgmental, and compassionate; and education that is age-appropriate and comprehensive.
The Hestia Women’s Giving Circle continues to play a vital role in Planned Parenthood’s ability to uphold the reproductive rights of women and girls in the community and I thank you for your partnership. With appreciation, Janet Carbonneau-Jones
