Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
Twenty-two individuals attended the Women’s Writing workshop facilitated by resident writer Karolina Letunova on October 10, 2023, at the Petoskey District Library. After the event, several of the participants started a discussion about how to keep this type of writing program going. Carre Tebeau, Associate Director of the Good Hart Artist Residency, agreed to lead an ongoing writing group as an outcome of this project.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
The goal of this project was to provide an artist’s residency for one female writer and provide care for her children at their home. In addition, the goal was to work with this artist to facilitate a public workshop for up to 20 women. All of these goals were met.
The artist, Karolina Letunova, commented on her residency evaluation, “It was phenomenal. You all are a tremendous team and you do an absolutely fantastic job.” She also said that she was “changed by the experience in the best possible way.”
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
The workshop was called “find your truth,” and the artist helped participants articulate emotional truth. Participants found it so powerful that they didn’t want it to end, and it spawned twice monthly continued programming, facilitated by our associate director. One woman, having never tried creative writing before, now calls herself a poet and brings a poem every time. Another started sharing her experience with breast cancer and has found writing about it healing. Another is reclaiming her voice by writing about an abusive marriage. Two continued participants work for the Women’s Resource Center and use the workshop to better understand how writing can help women find their truth. These are just some of the examples of how “find your truth” via writing has become an ongoing, empowering experience for these women.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
As a result of the initial workshop a new writers group has been established called Lake Michigan Writers. They meet every other week at the Petoskey District Library.
The group is currently run on a volunteer basis by our Associate Director, Carrie Teabeu, and the use of the space is donated by the Petoskey District Library. While this has allowed for the establishment of this group we are looking for ongoing funding support to cover a portion of our Associate Director’s time as well as bring in an additional artist to facilitate a songwriting workshop for this group and other interested women in the community.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
The grant was announced in our email newsletter, on social media, and in an article on the writing workshop in the September 27, 2023, Harbor Light Newspaper.
Summary Comments
We greatly appreciate Hestia’s financial support in helping us facilitate the residency and workshop with Karolina Letunova. It was beneficial both for the artist and the community, even more so than we initially planned. Watching the idea grow from a singular residency and workshop into an ongoing community connection between women has been powerful and satisfying.
