Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
Thirty-one young women and children were served by the grant awarded to the Beaver Island Historical Society for the 2023 Kids Camp: Supporting Emerging Female Leaders on Beaver Island project.
The leadership opportunity for young women helps them to gain confidence and empowers them with leadership skills while encouraging them to be compassionate and diverse with young children.
Our 2023 leadership featured to young women who co-chaired the coordinator position to plan and execute Kids Camp 2023. 48 children participated and of those over half were girls, and the camp had 7 counselors of which 5 were young women.
The programing and experience for the young female campers included themed activities about cultural diversity, teamwork, literacy, creativity, and play. These experiences were based from the following daily themes: Native American, Natural History, Logging/Paper making, PowerBook Bags and a Community Picnic, Talent Show & Water Games.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
The young leadership excelled and launched an exceptional Kids Camp. The parents all had great reviews and positive feedback. The children were fully engaged, excited to return each day and were engaged all day.
The parent/guardians were sent evaluations to complete and return. The feedback was noted and is to be considered in this years planning.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
It is very rewarding to see the same young children return each year and witness the growth and confidence they emerge with. Last summer a 4 year old attended camp. It was her first year. On the last day at our community picnic when it was her turn to share something fun about herself, she had her Grandpa come on the stage and play a guitar while she sang a song. It was so cute, tears flowed throughout the audience!
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
We charge $100 tuition for each child. The tuition collected essentially covers expenses for snacks, supplies and per diems for the presenters but does not cover expenses associated for the counselors.
We solicit local business and apply for small grants to help cover the staff cost for the week.
We believe it is important to offer an affordable Kids Camp for our community. In the summer the Island focus tends to turn towards adult tourism revenue streams and few organized activities are planned for the youth. The camp offers young parents an opportunity to plan fun summer activities for their children while also providing an opportunity for them to reconnect with their schoolmates and also offers seasonal residents an opportunity to meet other island children.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
We published this grant in the Northern Islander Newspaper, Historical Society Newsletters and on our social media. We also verbally recognize the Hestia Circle on our Community Day. The day is open to family members and the community. We have a talent show and in the beginning we recognize our funding sources and staff.
