Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

This year, we served ten woman and five girls through the program. This includes four female heads of household. It is amazing to see the different ways that this program impacts women in all stages of life.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

The Foundations for Our Future project continues to be a success. It is amazing to see the Meadowlands project become a community! Each new buyer brings their own unique story and experience to this growing neighborhood. To date, 15 homes have been sold/pending sale, 11 builds are under construction at 85% completion or greater, and we will be kicking off 12 more builds this build cycle in Phase III of the project. We are also really excited to share that we’ve been able to expand the project into a Phase IV, which will result in six additional builds in the Meadowlands subdivision in 2025.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

Our newest homeowner is a young, single professional just starting off on her own. She is enrolled at North Central Michigan College working to expand her education and career opportunities beyond her current full-time job at Home Depot. After receiving our mortgage readiness assistance, she wanted to do her due diligence and see what else was out there in the housing market before committing to a home. With her mortgage pre-approval in hand, she ventured into the open market and found herself out priced and outbid at every turn. After losing out on several offers, she returned to Habitat with a better understanding of housing costs in our region, and how Habitat can help overcome the barriers that impact even well-qualified buyers.

Our first Meadowlands baby is on the way! That’s right, a family of four that purchased a home last summer will be welcoming a new addition to the household. A three-bedroom house with a nice big yard as opposed to their previous tiny one-bedroom apartment where the adults slept in the living room makes it possible for this young family to grow and prosper.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

Our mission to solve housing insecurity in our region is ongoing. When our homes are sold, funds received at closing are reinvested back into building more homes. However, every home built is done so at a loss as it costs more to build a home in today’s economy than what our average households can afford. Therefore, philanthropy will always be a crucial component of program sustainability. This includes private donations, grants, federal and state funding. Without support, this work would not be possible, and we are most grateful for our continued partnership with Hestia.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

Your support was celebrated through our social media pages and e-news.

A post on July 5, 2023 including a photos of the organization’s logo stated, “We are so honored to be a recipient of the 2023 Hestia Women's Giving Circle grant. This wonderful group donated $10,500 to the Foundations for our Future campaign. This gift will be instrumental as we push into Phase II of the Meadowlands subdivision. Summary Comments

There are too many amazing stories to tell, but here is one more!

Another single-female buyer is at a very different place in life than our previous buyer. When married, she moved away from the area, but then found herself called back to the region after her divorce. Upon returning, she rented a nice apartment where she has lived the past seven years. When she began thinking ahead to retirement, now in her 50s, she thought about where she saw herself, and it wasn’t in the same little apartment. She wanted to own a home, to build equity, and someday pay off her mortgage so that she could comfortably retire in a quality, efficient home. A home with a universally accessible design where she could age in place, enjoying comfort and safety for the rest of her life.
It is truly inspiring to see all the ways that your gifts help to support the lifelong success of so many amazing women and the next generations in our community.
