Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
*Please note, the original grant was to support a 2 week artist in residence with two dancers from Sacramento Ballet. However, due to the timing of the funding received and schedule of dancers, we instead received approval to bring Peter Sparling as the artist in residence around the Nutcracker performance.* This program was a huge success and went above and beyond our goals. Peter Sparling’s choreography allowed our students to achieve new levels of movement composition and artistry within the form. Sparling brought a contemporary approach to our Nutcracker, heightening our student’s proficiency on pointe and empowering our female students with the skills necessary to pursue a professional career in dance. Our Nutcracker 2023, which featured Peter Sparling's Waltz of the Flowers, was the largest attended Nutcracker performance in our history, selling out all three shows weeks in advance. The community delighted in the sharing of this work, thoroughly in awe of how the students evolved as dance artists within a few short months. As a result, several of our young women have realized they want to pursue a career as a professional dancer.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
The impact this production had on our audience was tremendous, as the community took on a new appreciation for the artform. One audience member immediately sought out other dance performances of similar caliber in the area to attend. She traveled to the Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival in Kalamazoo this spring, simply because she wanted to see more dance like this, and Kalamazoo was the closest location for it.
This particular residency with Sparling was so rewarding to our students, as one of our faculty participated in the work alongside the dancers. This teacher is an exemplary role model to our female students, and empowered them through this rehearsal process by demonstrating how to take charge of their craft. With this project being so intergenerational, our students realized the impact this work can have at any stage in their career.
As we have continued through the school year, our students have remarked on the deep impact this program made on their artistry and career goals. We had a record breaking audition season this year, with our dancers receiving acceptances to numerous nationally acclaimed summer intensive programs in both ballet and alternative dance.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
This specific project concluded last December, however we intend to build upon the work Sparling created during this residency for our coming Nutcracker 2024, further engaging our students in the process of creating contemporary work within a classical ballet. The insight gained from this project was incredibly valuable to the students and will continue to benefit their future careers the more frequently they engage in similar processes.

We can’t thank Hestia Women’s Giving Circle enough for supporting our mission to enrich and inspire lives through the arts. This gift has empowered our young women by broadening their leadership skills, ultimately preparing them for higher education and future careers. Innovative programming such as this provides our audiences with the opportunity to engage more deeply with the arts, experiencing professional dance works first hand right in Northern Michigan. The ability to make this work financially accessible to our community has widened the scope of lives we are able to reach.
