Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

Planned Parenthood of Michigan provided a total of 810 women and girls, from Emmet and Charlevoix counties, with access to essential sexual and reproductive health care and education.

At the Petoskey health center, a total of 439 women and girls received health care services. Through the Virtual Health Center 29 females received care, and through Planned Parenthood Direct 17 females accessed care when and where they needed it.

Of our patients served, three hundred and twenty-two patients were from Emmet County and 163 patients were from Charlevoix County. Forty-three percent of the patients experienced incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.

Through our education programs, menstrual hygiene kits were distributed at Project Connect 2025 to over 50 women and 25 female students at North Central Michigan College received relationship education. In schools, sexual health/puberty education programs were delivered at Charlevoix High School, East Jordan Middle/High School, and Lakeview Academy reaching over 250 young women.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

Planned Parenthood of Michigan set a goal to serve 750 women and girls from July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025. As of March 31, 2025, we exceeded our goal and served a total of 810 women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties.

To evaluate our program, we used our electronic health records to track the number of patients served, the services provided, and patient income status. We also use our patient satisfaction surveys. According to our patient satisfaction surveys we learned that our patients felt safe, heard, and genuinely cared for and the health center team was kind, helpful, and caring.

To measure the impact of our comprehensive sexuality education programs, we record participant information in our education database where we collect and record the gender of students served, the session location, and the program topic.

The information collected allows Planned Parenthood to measure its ability to provide care and education in the community.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

Planned Parenthood’s Community Outreach Educator in Petoskey shared how the education program that she provided to the Residence Hall at North Central Michigan College, impacted the students. Many of the female students shared how invaluable the information they received was, especially the consent content and the signs of supportive/unsupportive relationships.

The students specifically stated that they wish they would have received this information when in high school because it would have helped prevent specific experiences they faced as young people, that were harmful and could have been prevented.

The information the female students received from Planned Parenthood made a positive impact in their lives and will allow them to engage in healthy relationships in the future.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

On April 2nd, Planned Parenthood of Michigan announced the upcoming closure of the Petoskey Health Center, a difficult decision driven by the loss of federal funding. Despite this setback, Planned Parenthood of Michigan remains deeply committed to serving patients in Emmet and Charlevoix counties. Essential healthcare services will continue to be accessible through the Planned Parenthood Virtual Health Center, the Planned Parenthood Direct app, and support from a local Community Outreach Educator.

Available services include birth control, emergency contraception, gender-affirming care, HIV services, medication abortion, treatment for UTIs and yeast infections, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). To better meet the needs of the community, the Virtual Health Center will be expanding its hours to offer evening and weekend appointments.

To fund our services, Planned Parenthood of Michigan will continue to rely on patient payments from commercial insurance reimbursement, health savings and flexible spending accounts, fund raising, and grants. For patients who are uninsured, we will whenever possible, provide low-cost or no cost care.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

The grant award from the Hestia Women's Giving Circle was publicized in Planned Parenthood of Michigan's Education newsletter and patients who received financial assistance for their care at the Petoskey health center were informed that their care was made possible in part through the Hestia Women's Giving Circle.

Summary Comments

In partnership with Hestia, Planned Parenthood of Michigan provided women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties with access to essential sexual and reproductive health care and education. Health care services made it possible for women and girls to receive vital cancer screenings, access emergency contraception and birth control to prevent or delay pregnancy, receive testing and treatment for STIs and HIV in support of their sexual health, and access medication abortion care.

Through community outreach activities and the relationships developed with local schools, women and girls were able to receive valuable information about sexual health, healthy relationships, and puberty. Access to our education services empowers women and girls with the resources they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health, access health care and care for their bodies.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan is most grateful for Hestia’s longstanding commitment to the health and well-being of women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties and it is our hope to continue our partnership in the future. Thank you!
