Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

Lake Michigan Writers Group - 20 women

Jilliane Wheatcroft songwriting workshop - 18 participants (12 women)

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

Our project proposal for this grant included two projects. The first was for funding to support the Lake Michigan Writers group, which was being led by our Associate Director at the time, Carrie Tebeau. This group consisted of twenty local women writers. The second project was to cover a portion of the cost of the residency for Jilaine Wheatcroft, a composer from England who was doing a songwriting workshop in January 2025.

The grant we received was for $1000 to support the first project.

Unfortunately, Carrie Tebeau contracted long COVID and had to go on medical leave on August 20, 2024, and was unable to return to work after the leave ended due to ongoing medical issues. The writer's group continued for several more sessions but ultimately shut down in September 2024. A new writers' group has since been restarted by some of the previous group members, but GHAR is no longer involved.

So, due to the unfortunate situation with our Associate Director, we did not meet the original goal for program one.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

Hestia’s support of the writers group this year helped several writers find new audiences. One member used the feedback and support of the group to gain the courage to submit an essay for publication–and was successful–even getting to read the piece on Interlochen Public Radio. Other members joined GHAR’s Midsummer’s Daydream event and read works out loud as featured poets to a public audience. The support of the group helped these writers not only find each other, but also helped them to believe in their creative voices and discover a willingness to share their creativity more publicly.

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

The Women’s Writing Group project will not continue in its original planned format due to the loss of our Associate Director, Carrie Tebeau, who was facilitating the program. As noted earlier, a new writers' group was formed by some of the original members. This group is open to both women and men writers and meets regularly at the Petoskey District Library.

Public Relations

How did you publicize this grant?

Please list any examples.

The grant was announced in one of our newsletters. The Hestia logo was included in the sponsor area in our spring brochure listing all the upcoming artists for 2024 and in our annual report.

Summary Comments

The main focus of the grant per the email received on June 5, 2024, from Ali Hill was to help cover the cost of the writers' program, which we applied $381 of the $1,000 grant funds to cover the salary costs from June until the program shutdown due to illness in September. The balance of the funds ($619) was applied to composer Jillianve Wheatcroft’s residency per the original proposal. Below is a summary of the songwriting workshop facilitated by UK composer Jilliane Wheatcroft.

The event was held on January 9, 2025, at the Petoskey District Library. Jillane walked the participants through a structured approach focusing on inspiration, rhythm, and melodies. Towards the end of the workshop, she recorded the participants singing and chanting the lyrics created that evening. Jillane then went back to the residency, composed the associated music, and created a music video based on the workshop, which included the participants' lyrics and voices.
