Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
This year, we served 17 woman and five (5) children through the program. This includes ten (10) female heads of household. It is amazing to see the different ways that this program impacts women in all stages of life—women with so many unique backgrounds and talents.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
The Foundations for Our Future project continues to be a success. In particular, it is amazing to see the Meadowlands project become a community! Each new buyer brings their own unique story and experience to this growing neighborhood. To date, a total of 29 homes have been sold/pending sale through the Foundations for Our Future building campaign.
This grant specifically helped to support the construction of 12 homes in Phase 3 of the project (through May 2025). Eight (8) homes are complete and sold or pending sale. Construction on the remaining four (4) homes will be wrapping up this spring before we kick off our next build cycle this summer.
We are also really excited to share that we will not only meet our Foundations for Our Future goal, but we will exceed it! We have been able to expand our project, adding a Phase 4, which will result in six additional builds in the Meadowlands subdivision in 2025-2026. We hope Hestia will continue to support our efforts in helping women and their children achieve life-long housing and financial stability through this new expansion.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Every home sold is its own unique success story. Just a few of the women’s lives deeply impacted through this project include:
Kendra moved away for college, then came back to Petoskey to student teach. She secured a full-time teaching position in 2020 at Harbor Springs Highschool. What she wasn’t able to find was a house and even an apartment was hard to find. She gave up, and was living with her parents while considering if she could stay in this community. That’s when she heard about Habitat. Kendra went from feeling hopeless to closing on a home in just three months. She is now “..enjoying freedom and flexibility [she] never had before.”
Jessie is an Emmet County Deputy. She was connected with our program after the Sheriff discussed their staffing concerns with our Program Services Manager. The Sheriff shared how costly it’s been to outfit their officers, just to have them leave the area because they cannot find housing. Several officers are currently making long commutes from outside the county. Deputy Jessie Shaw will be moving into her home on May 5th.

Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Our mission to solve housing insecurity in our region is ongoing. When our homes are sold, funds received at closing are reinvested back into building more homes. However, every home built is done so at a loss as it costs more to build a home in today’s economy than what our average households can afford. Therefore, philanthropy will always be a crucial component of program sustainability. This includes private donations, grants, federal and state funding. Without support, this work would not be possible, and we are most grateful for our continued partnership with Hestia.
Public Relations

We celebrate our grant funders through social media, in our monthly e-news, and as newsletter features.
Additional Stories:
Before purchasing her home, Rebecca, a hospice nurse, was commuting from Gaylord. She is thrilled to be able to not only live closer for communing sake, but to have another way to feel connected to her patients--as members of the same community--as neighbors.
Tammy started exploring our program when she was notified that her rent for her third-floor apartment was about to go up, again! Not only does she now own a home, paying close to the same as she would to rent her apartment, but her adult daughter, who is diagnosed with MS, no longer has to struggle with several flights of stairs each day. And, because this home is built with universal design, this mother and daughter duo will never have to worry about future accessibility needs.

Budget Note:
This grant, supporting twelve homes, is part of a larger, multi-year project. House development timelines and costs, and the sales for those homes occur on a rolling basis. In addition, this project includes larger, longer-term neighborhood development costs (roads and utility expansion), which are still ongoing. This means that costs are often overlapping between fiscal years (ours ends June 30th), and due to the nature of this work, it is difficult to align budget reporting with a grantor's project reporting period. Therefore, the financial data provided is our best estimation of costs specifically applied to this grant request.
