Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
We exceeded our goal of providing 40 female youth with 40 female mentors. As of April 30, 2025 we have served 71 female matches in Charlevoix and Emmet counties since June 15, 2024.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Our mentoring program in Charlevoix and Emmet counties continues to grow each year, with thriving mentoring relationships in both our community-based and school-based programs.
Program evaluation is accomplished via consistent match support contacts to the parent, child and mentor. The Mentoring Specialist staff are required to assess and document child safety and well-being, relationship development, coaching and support, and match goals and outcomes with every contact. The length of relationship between Bigs and Littles provides an additional impact measurement, as relationships continue to develop and grow stronger over time. The average match length in Charlevoix and Emmet counties is currently 33.9 months versus the national average match length of 21.3 months. Lastly, annual surveys of our youth report on the successful impact of our program.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
At just eight years old, Iris was struggling with her self-confidence and often found it difficult to express herself. She would sit quietly in the back of her classroom, her bright spirit dimmed by uncertainty. When she met her Big Sister Sarah, everything began to change. Sarah, a compassionate and dedicated volunteer, quickly recognized the potential within Iris.
Through weekly meetings filled with art projects, storytelling, and heartfelt conversations, Iris has blossomed. Sarah encourages her to explore her interests, and after each session, Iris walks in a little taller, her smile shines a bit brighter and she's not afraid to be herself.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
Annual costs to support one Big and Little match is $2,300. Bigs’ strategic plan includes growing the mentoring programs in Charlevoix and Petoskey to support a greater number of children, thereby allowing for a greater impact in those communities. This will require an increase in financial support from the communities. We are working alongside donors, supporters and community leaders to identify way to increase our advocacy, awareness and the critical needs of the 1,754 children in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties that have been identified as those that could greatly benefit from having a mentor in their live.
