Project results and Impact

How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?

During this year, eight (8) women were served through Habitat for Humanity, six (6) were female heads of household. An additional 12 children were served along with their mothers, bringing the total number of individuals served to 20. The program reached woman across a range of life stages and circumstances, reflecting the diverse housing needs within our community.

Goal of the Project

Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?

If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:

If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:

The Foundations for Our Future Phase 4 project met its goals for the grant period. To date, 33 homes have been sold/pending sale in Meadowlands, which demonstrates progress toward our sustainable, housing mission.

The Hestia grant generously supported the construction of six (6) homes in Phase 4 of the project (through June 2026). Five (5) homes are complete and sold/pending sale; construction on the sixth home will be completed this spring.

We have measured success through meeting construction deadlines and sales of the homes; tracking is maintained by our project manager and program services team.

When the final Phase 4 home is completed, the Meadowlands project will reach the finish line—a significant milestone for NMHFH and our generous supporters! The lessons learned from this large-scale neighborhood development are now being applied to two new expansive projects. We hope Hestia will continue to partner with us as we use this proven model to help more women and children achieve housing stability and financial security.

Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?

If so, please share it:

This project’s success is found in the lives of the women and children who now call Meadowlands home. One such story:

For Melissa, a hardworking restaurant employee and single mother, homeownership felt out of reach. Living with her son in an apartment, she dreamed of the stability that only a place to call her own would provide. When she learned about Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity, everything changed. Through Habitat’s homeownership program, Melissa turned her dream into reality. Today, she and her son have a stable home and a foundation for their future. For Melissa, owning a home means “everything she’s ever dreamed of.”

Sustainability

Will this project continue?

If so, how will it be funded?

If not, why not?

Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity’s mission to address housing insecurity in our region is ongoing, along with our commitment to the programs that make affordable homeownership possible.

Our revolving funds model means that proceeds from each home sale are reinvested directly into the construction of future homes. However, the gap between construction costs and what our partner families can afford continues to grow larger in today’s economy and housing markets. Therefore, philanthropy will always be an essential component of funding our programs. To sustain our work, we developed a diversified revenue strategy that includes private donations, grants, federal and state funding. This approach ensures we are not dependent on any single revenue source.

As we celebrate the completion of Meadowlands and look ahead to new development projects, continued partnership with our partners like Hestia is more important than ever. We are deeply grateful for your investment in this work; and in the women and families whose lives are transformed by it.

Additional Stories:

Eveline was thankful for the housing she had for her family, but after a year of renting a mobile home, she was ready for something more permanent! As the part owner of a local restaurant and mother to three young children, Eveline was busy with significant responsibilities—making Habitat’s program services team an essential source of support. Today, Eveline and her family are settled into a home of their own, spending their free time exploring nearby trails and building the stable and secure life she wanted for her family.

Holly, a mother of four, once felt “hemmed in on all sides”. She and her partner were paying increasingly unaffordable rent with no space for her growing family. Through Habitat’s program, they gained access to financial literacy education and guidance to achieve affordable homeownership. Today, their mortgage, including taxes and insurance, is less than their former rent. Their children now have more space, stability, and security. “Home means peace and and calmness,” Holly says.

Summary Comments

Budget Note:
This grant, supporting six homes, is part of a larger, multi-year project. House development timelines and costs, and the sales for those homes occur on a rolling basis. In addition, this project includes larger, longer-term neighborhood development costs (roads and utility expansion), which are still ongoing. This means that costs are often overlapping between fiscal years (ours ends June 30th), and due to the nature of this work, it is difficult to align budget reporting with a grantor's project reporting period. Therefore, the financial data provided is our best estimation of costs specifically applied to this grant request.
