Project results and Impact
How many girls/women have been served by the project during this project year?
By June 30, 2026, we anticipate that we will have reached a total of 1,484 women and girls through this project.
To date, PPMI has successfully served a total of 1,095 women and girls. This was accomplished through in person programs provided by the Youth Education and Training Specialist who reached 145 girls through in school programs at East Jordan Middle/High School, Charlevoix High School, Michigan Youth Opportunities Initiative (MYOI) and Lakeview Academy. Through an Askable Adult outreach event and a Shred the Stigma mental health event, a total of 220 women/girls were reached. Participants at outreach events received educational resources including information about services provided through our virtual health center, as well as our Askable Adult Toolkit and our Youth Mental Health Workbook. This toolkit was also sent to an estimated 700 women through our supporter newsletter. An additional 31 women/girls were reached through our training on consent provided to Camp Michigania staff.
Goal of the Project
Did you meet your program goals for the grant period?
If yes, how do you know? Please describe any program evaluation you use:
If no, please describe current barriers and how you are working to overcome them:
Despite the closure of the brick-and-mortar PPMI building in Petoskey, we were able to maintain and expand our community partnerships and preserve the impact PPMI’s education and outreach work in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. We continued to teach, train, show up at outreach events, and be a resource in our community. We track these efforts through attendance sheets which are transferred to our data management system. We utilize a program evaluation tool for our in-school education programs where students can give feedback on the sexual health content as well as the facilitation of it. Most young people rank the program a 5 on a 1-5 scale and share how important the information is and how grateful they are that the program exists. Many young people even wish the sessions were longer! We are grateful for the opportunity to continue this work in Charlevoix and Emmet County.
To measure progress our data shows:
Education goal: 500-600 people/250-300 women. Actual 145 women.
Outreach goal: 100 people/50 women. Actual number 220 women.
Training goal: 300 people/150 women. Actual number 31 women.
Newsletter goal for Askable Adult Toolkit: 750 people. Actual distribution: 928.
Do you have a story of how your program positively changed participant's situation, behavior, or knowledge?
If so, please share it:
Planned Parenthood educators were able to support Concord Academy in Petoskey in creating a Sex Education Advisory Board and also help in getting their sexual health education approved by their school board. This was the first time Concord had a formal sex education program implemented, and through some school and community members were nervous, the support for the program was overwhelming. When PPMI educators went in to facilitate the curriculum, students met the program with mixed emotions: nervous, interested, scared, uncomfortable and even excited. After spending three days talking all things sexual health, a young high school girl came up to the PPMI educator and said, “this really blew me away. I’m so grateful we talked about consent and communication, that is something me and my friends talk about all the time – how kids need more tools on how to do this and when to know when things aren’t okay.” This small but mighty moment illustrates how the programs PPMI is implementing are not only meeting young people where they are at, it is providing an essential resource in what is so often a rural resource desert.
Sustainability
Will this project continue?
If so, how will it be funded?
If not, why not?
At this time, PPMI is unable to guarantee future funding for any of our programs. Everything is a year-by-year decision that is based on our funding reality. Therefore, we are unable to answer yes or no to our ability to sustain this program.
This year, PPMI has endured a $1.8 million loss in Medicaid and a $3.4 million reduction in our Title X funding. The remaining $5.4 million in Title X funding has been targeted by the Trump administration and we do not know the status for continued funding in October.
We don’t know exactly what the future holds, but we are doing everything we can to prepare for it so that we can show up for the people we serve throughout our state.
Public Relations
How did you publicize this grant?
Please list any examples.
We publicize this grant through verbal advertising that programs are supported and made possible by the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle.
Summary Comments
Planned Parenthood of Michigan is most grateful for the support of the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle. The last year was a very challenging year as a result of the current administration’s new budget bill that impacted our funding. Yet we endured and provided women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties with access to our core education programs and found new opportunities to expand the number of young people that have access to sexual health education.
By the end of the grant period, Planned Parenthood anticipates serving an additional 225 women/girls after completing upcoming programs at East Jordan Middle/High School, Alanson Public Schools, Concord Schools, and Charlevoix High School. After the upcoming Project Connect event, we anticipate reaching an additional 115 women/girls through outreach events and 250 period care kits distributed. And coupled with upcoming trainings at Camp Michigania and Bayview ObGyn we anticipate reaching a total of 79 women/girls through professional trainings.
During this challenging year, thank you for trusting us to serve women and girls who live in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties through our sexual health education programs.
