Project Description:
We are going to recruit at least 20 female volunteers and match them with young girls in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties to provide them with guidance and support; share experiences and opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have access to; and remain a constant in their lives to help them achieve their full potential.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
95
What percentage are female?
65
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
We will serve 90-100 children in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties during this time period. The average male to female ratio in our program over the past eight years is 65% female and 35% male. We have no reason to believe this will not continue.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Children are identified through their local schools, counselors and teachers who reach out to us on a regular basis requesting support for children. The schools rely on our program to support their student's academic needs. Some children have been identified through friends and neighbors of their families. The Bigs' brand is well-known, and we often get requests from parents looking for support for their child. More than 90% of the children in our program are at poverty level.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Improved self-confidence; improved behavior; improved social skills; better attendance at school; improved academic performance; and an overall sense of belonging. Girls become more responsible, more productive and understand the importance of a good education. They are able to achieve their full potential when they have this important adult female role model in their life.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Each match develops goals and objectives every year based on the child's specific needs and abilities. Bigs uses a variety of tools to measure program effectiveness and the goals set forth for the match. The strength of the relationship is measured through a survey conducted several times each year. Children also complete a Youth Outcomes Survey each year which indicates the child's success in avoiding risky behaviors; their academic progress; and their social and behavioral development. Mentoring Specialists are in contact with the child, mentor and guardian several times throughout the year asking a very specific set of questions to attain match progress and determine strategies for support.
