Project Description:
According to Actor's Equity, of the shows opening between 2013 and 2015, only 37% of stage management jobs were filled by women. While the industry has made strides forward, the disparity in this field remains.
Hestia’s grant would help the Center enable a young woman to gain experience in the male dominated field of stage management and production by helping to fund its 2020 Summer Production Internship.
The position has been offered to Petoskey graduate Samantha Giammalva. Samantha's experience began with the district’s middle school backstage apprentice program. It continued through high school where she was the "go to" student stage manager, and on to Western Michigan University where she currently pursues a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, majoring in stage management.
We are thrilled to offer Samantha a chance to build her resume under the watch of our professional technical team and invite Hestia to partner with us to support women in technical arts close to home.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
7
What percentage are female?
86
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
Six of the seven 2020 Summer Internships for the Center have been filled by young women representing the fields of Box Office, Business Operations, Special Events, House Management, Marketing, and Production. With regards to women being a significant part of a qualified college-aged pool, the talent is certainly there.
To be competitive AFTER college, young women such as Samantha, who are passionate and well versed in their chosen field, need solid resume experience they can afford to pursue as students. Hestia’s support of one internship -- the production position -- helps the Center offer key resume-building opportunities for all interns at competitive wages. Support helps level the playing field so more candidates may apply regardless of financial circumstances.
The Center follows all equal opportunity hiring practices and cannot favor one gender over another; its internships create greater access for all young people who seek a career in the arts. However, this in turn directly benefits women as is the case with the 2020 production position. It increases the likelihood that when employers seek professional production staff, the talent pool includes a greater number of highly qualified female candidates.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Interns are hired via a rigorous application and interview process led by our Education Director, Heather Russell, a veteran Petoskey teacher of 30 years.
In order to attract a broader field of skilled individuals and to provide a respectful work environment, the Center has raised funds for the past two years to compensate its college interns competitively and professionally. This ensures more students, particularly those who need to work over the summer to cover college expenses, can afford to take an internship with the Center.
Need is not considered in the application process, only qualification -- and to a degree, ability to secure housing locally during the program period. (The Center assists interns with housing by connecting them with potential opportunities including through the North Central Michigan College dormitories.)
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The Center's mission revolves around access to world-class arts and education.
The entertainment industry, though, has been one of the last fields in the country to examine its practices and management traditions through a lens of equal opportunity, particularly where women are concerned. Fortunately, there is a renewed focus on being more intentional, for example, in examining scripts contributed by women, for telling stories through a female perspective, for eliminating bias in hiring, and for creating a workplace environment where all employees can reach their full potential including eliminating a "boys club" mentality and refuting stereotypes which bind gender to skill set.
The Center's Internship program achieves much of the above. For employees, it offers a chance to practice working with a diversity of talent and to gauge skill by its own merit. For operations, students inject fresh ideas from some of the country's best theater programs into the Center's practices. Most important, for young people, internships build a bridge between school and work, creating greater access to targeted jobs in the arts, a clear pathway that is important for all, especially for women.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Our goal is to make sure interns leave feeling as if they have been productive, made a positive contribution, and have grown as professionals while helping us execute a world-class season of entertainment and donor outreach.
Therefore, built into each internship are opportunities for learning, reflection and feedback -- both formally and informally for students as well as for staff. For example, upon arrival, each intern meets with a mentor to set goals which are again discussed at a mid-summer check-in and in final evaluations. At weekly meetings or by survey, students provide feedback, and all of these practices help us improve.
When a former intern calls to proudly tell us they have landed a full-time position, we know we have been successful!
