Project Description:

We nourish our neediest students (ages 11 to 17) by providing a place for them to shop at either the Northmen Dens (PMS & PHS), Harbor Hut (HSMS), or Lakeview Locker (Lakeview Academy HS) each Friday for free weekend food, toiletries, school supplies and new clothing in a manner that respects dignity, encourages academic success and sustains dreams. We began with 8 students (2017) and now can have 135+ students shopping each Friday. The impact of the pandemic for these student's and their families is devastating. We will see a substantial increase in the number attending in this September since our students live in generational or situational poverty. In the 2019/2020 school year there were 731 students receiving Free or Reduced Cost Lunch which is 1 out of 3 Petoskey/Harbor Springs MS & HS students coping with food insecurity. In 2018/2019 school year there were 610 students. One girl wrote to us, "Thank you, you make my family's and my life better and less stressful. Love, J".

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

175

What percentage are female?

50

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

We buy toiletries, sanitary products, deodorant, combs, tooth paste, tooth brushes, shampoo, body wash, clothing even detergent and cleaning supplies with your grant. Knowing they can shop for much needed products (feminine products) that other "adult pantries" don't supply helps these young girls feel more confident. It helps their self-image when they compare themselves with other girls who have more resources than they do. We only buy new clothing on sale - we believe these young girls deserve new clothing. They love knowing the clothing is brand new. A student understands they can ask for a specific item they need, and, we will try our hardest to get it for them. The girls (and boys) trust us to keep our promises to them.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

All students are receiving either Free Lunch or Reduced Cost Lunch School Programs. Due to confidentiality we cannot not ask any of our students why they are shopping at our Youth Pantries. We do submit our student list to the school counselors periodically for them to review. If they see a student on the list who should not be on the list, they will talk to that student to learn why they feel the need to be shopping at the Den, Hut or Locker. We have perhaps only 2-3 students per school year in this category.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We have learned that Programs touch Lives (the food) but Relationships change Lives (the Volunteers). Our 52+ Angels dressed as Volunteers (45% are not from Emmanuel) have created a safe and nurturing environment at each of our Youth Pantries. At the High School Northmen Den, we have a number of young girls who actually have lunch at the Den each Friday. It gives them a chance to share their story to a volunteer and to hear encouraging words to believe in their dreams. We have one Junior girl who deals with a step mother who will not allow her to eat the family's food (counselors know about this situation). We have given her permission to ask a certain teacher to open the Den for her anytime during the week to shop for food when this happens. This girl is a good student and wants to be a Nurse. Having the empowerment to have food without dealing with a cruel step mother has given her hope to attend North Central Community College in 2021. Our volunteers have told her we will help her find the monies for a college scholarship. She is one in many who come to our Youth Pantries to be reminded that they have the empowerment within themselves to write a brighter future story for themselves.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

A few measures of success each week are: that the shelves are empty, and seeing how excited, relieved, and appreciative our students are when they are at the Dens, the Hut, or the Locker. We have heard from teachers, counselors, and principals that they have seen an "empowerment" from our youth pantry students due to having food during the weekend and the ability to have clean hair and bodies. Most of our students learn about the Youth Pantry from a friend. When we see students returning each week is a measure of success. A 12 year old girl, who with encouragement from a volunteer, has pursued her interest in art. She has great talent and loves sharing her new drawings. As one student told a volunteer, "Mr. Rinker, you have no idea how the Den helps my siblings and me. Thank you."
