Project Description:
CCSNM recognizes the increased numbers of low income families. Our project addresses poverty by providing newborn essentials to mother’s receiving pre/post-natal care through Emmet and Charlevoix Health Departments. The layette is a diaper bag filled with 24 pieces of infant clothing, a swaddle sleep sack recommended by the Child Abuse Prevention Council for promoting safe sleep, hooded towel & wash cloths, finger toothbrush, nail clippers, board book, burp cloths and a variety of baby care educational pamphlets The newest item included last year was an infant thermometer. The layette contents are packed by our ALL CCSNM volunteer membership. If the grant request is funded, the award will be used to purchase all of the above baby essentials. To our knowledge, CCSNM is the ONLY organization providing high quality necessities to newborns. In October, volunteers unpack shipping containers and place the items in individual diaper bags for delivery to the health departments.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
450
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
NA
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The criteria to receive a layette is based on financial needs of mothers enrolled in the Emmet and Charlevoix Health Departments Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP).
Otsego, Antrim and Cheboygan Health Departments also receive the remaining layettes totaling 250 of the 450.
$23,400 is spent on the total project.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The goal of this project is providing new mothers necessary items for their baby’s welfare: newborn clothing, safety items, and instructional materials. The motto of our national organization is “Nothing is ever too much to do for a child,” a quote from our founder. These words alone express the desire of our volunteer membership to provide basic needs to infants that may not be fulfilled through other sources. Over the span of 36 years CCSNM has distributed over 8,400 layettes.
The Layette Project offers new mothers a sense of empowerment in not having to worry about providing essential care items for their newborn. Having new clothing to show off their newborn gives the mother a sense of pride and joy. A Public Health RN said this, “I just gave a layette out to my client and she was thrilled. Her baby is one week old, and she did not have a diaper bag yet. She told me that she couldn’t afford $30 to buy a diaper bag when she has all of the other bills to pay. She excitedly went through the bag and was so grateful for everything she received. She loved the handknit cap and the SleepSac! All my clients love getting the Swaddle SleepSac which goes right along with teaching safe sleep practices.”
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
CCSNM layette coordinator contacts each health department RN and asks for feedback regarding if the number of layettes delivered meets their needs and if baby care items need to be added or removed.
