Project Description:
WRCNM’s Education & Employment Services (EES) provides women in need with learning support, career guidance, financial assistance for educational expenses, job search assistance and training, and professional clothing for work and job interviews. Through EES, eligible women may receive scholarships for tuition, textbooks, supplies and childcare while they attend classes. To be eligible, students must have demonstrated financial need and qualify as at-risk for a variety of reasons, such as: a single parent, being under-employed or unemployed, pursuing a non-traditional career, individual with limited English proficiency, or an individual with a disability. Need is further determined by income, family size, program requirements, credit hours, and additional criteria based on individual circumstances.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
20
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
NA
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Women interested in the EES program at WRCNM can connect to the service in various ways. The EES office is housed at North Central Michigan College, and students are welcome to request information from the EES Coordinator within the Learning Services department, through a referral from a NCMC staff person, and/or information and referral from a WRCNM staff member of a different program. Financial need must be demonstrated and is considered in eligibility for the program. All participants are required to complete the Federal Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA). Students may have limited or no income, hold large debts, and/or have costs for childcare, transportation, or medical care that limits their opportunity to pursue higher education and economic self-sufficiency. Scholarships that support tuition and funding for additional costs can greatly improve the opportunities available to a student and her journey.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The goal of this project is to improve the economic self-sufficiency of women in our community. To achieve this, EES provides scholarships to at-risk women so they can complete their education and pursue high-skilled, high-wage employment. Award amounts vary for each student depending on their needs, but range from as low as $50 for a textbook to as much as $1,000 for tuition. Scholarships reduce barriers and make a significant impact for women who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford higher education. The women served have unmet financial needs that traditional financial aid does not fulfill. The expenses for each semester include not only the cost of tuition, fees and books, but also childcare (if she is a single parent), transportation, and living expenses. Hestia scholarships help meet these needs. This program aligns with Hestia's mission to promote economic self-sufficiency and well-being for women and girls by addressing the critical need for education. While education is one of the most dependable paths to increasing economic self-sufficiency, it is also expensive. WRCNM continually leverages resources to support students with various needs as they pursue economic self-sufficiency and independence.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The Educational and Employment Services Coordinator works with scholarship recipients throughout their academic program and tracks each student’s academic progress. Overall, the program will be evaluated in terms of the number of students who obtain their degree and subsequent employment. In addition, Program Evaluation Surveys are given to students once per quarter during a pre-determined week to measure and evaluate program satisfaction.
