Project Description:
Flowers for Friends (FFF) refreshes donated flowers from weddings, funerals, church services and other events that would otherwise be thrown away and reassembles them into smaller arrangements that are delivered to isolated/vulnerable community members in need of a smile.
We are seeking a $2000 donation from the Hestia Women's Giving Circle to expand project operations/access supplies for 2020-2021, as follows:
Goal 1: As resources allow, FFF will increase output/serve additional locations as new non-profits with recipients who can benefit from deliveries are identified.
Goal 2: FFF will seek new flower donors to serve additional recipients at newly identified non-profits.
Goal 3: With additional flower donations/as resources allow, FFF will increase the flower delivery frequency to recipients at identified area-wide non-profits.
Goal 4: As resources permit, FFF will increase holiday delivery outreach beyond nursing homes to recipients at other non-profits.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
5500
What percentage are female?
85
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
Women are overwhelmingly the recipients of our deliveries at nursing homes, senior assisted living, Meals on Wheels, hospice, chemotherapy, radiation, dialysis, senior centers, adult day care, food banks, the domestic violence safe home and homeless shelter, among many other locations. The delivery of flowers provides an avenue to build bridges to women who are often segregated from the community-at-large by virtue of age, infirmity or situation-specific life challenges. Our in-house volunteer team, WomanWorks, is 100% female; the project was founded by a Girl Scout troop and remains women-driven and woman-focused. Since inception, Flowers for Friends has been and continues to be an all-volunteer, true non-profit sustained by many hands along with grants, small fundraising efforts and community donations; access to funding to grow our initiatives is limited to those sources.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Recipients are identified to receive Flowers for Friends deliveries by virtue of receiving services at an area-wide non-profit. Specifically, our program aims to increase communication/contact with community members who are isolated or facing challenges due to age, infirmity or life circumstances (homelessness, food insecurity, mental illness, domestic violence among many others) and to make people smile. While we do not specifically measure financial need, recipients' respective situations suggest that they are not persons of financial means. Our deliveries are rotated among the more than 36 area-wide non-profits served thus far and we are always looking for more non-profits sites that we can add to our delivery cycle. To date, the project has made more than 63,000 human connections via flowers; this is our creative approach to the pervasive social problem of isolation and loneliness, which has a significant, deleterious impact on individual health and well-being.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Like the Greek goddess Hestia, Flowers for Friends expresses love and concern for others through thoughtful acts. We make a difference in the lives of local women by rearranging donated flowers that would otherwise be in the trash, delivering smiles, happiness and love to people in need.
It is easy to assume that essential volunteering doesn’t involve flowers, which may be perceived as a luxury instead of a necessity. But the essence of the human condition is the hope that someone loves and cares for us. Folks who are alone don’t receive flowers. People who are homeless, hungry or facing serious medical expenses don’t spend finite resources on flowers. Flowers for Friends’ deliveries say, “Someone is thinking about you; you matter.” It’s a powerful message that reaches about 5,000 recipients per year.
What we hope to achieve is best expressed in the following letter, one of thousands received since project inception:
“Dear Friends,
I am Bertha, 92 years old and attend the Pellston Senior Center. Last week one day just before lunch a beautiful box of flower arrangements showed up. The Center lit up like a Christmas tree. The seniors were filled with Joy and Happiness. Thank you for the love you sent our way.”
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Goal 1 Expected Outcome/Measurement: Detailed delivery logs are maintained that would document the identification and addition of new non-profit locations/recipients.
Goal 2 Expected Outcome/Measurement: Detailed donor logs are maintained that would document the identification and addition of new donors.
Goal 3 Expected Outcome/Measurement: Detailed delivery logs are maintained that document the frequency and location of deliveries.
Goal 4 Expected Outcome/Measurement: Detailed delivery logs are maintained that would document the holiday delivery outreach beyond nursing homes to recipients at other non-profit locations.
From a subjective/anecdotal perspective, our success is always measured by the input we receive from our recipients, donors and non-profits and smiles delivered.
