Project Description:
YMCA of Northern Michigan is working diligently to start a program called Girls Who Code (GWC). GWC is a national non-profit working to close the gender gap in technology. Their programs educate, equip, and inspire girls with the computing skills they'll need to pursue 21st century opportunities. The program itself is free, but there are costs associated. We will need to pay for staff, building use, electronics, supplies, snack etc. to run this program. "In 1995, 37% of computer scientists were women. Today, it’s only 24%. The percent will continue to decline if we do nothing. We know that the biggest drop off of girls in computer science is between the ages of 13 and 17." We would like all girls in Emmet County to be encouraged to seek out tech skills, trades and careers. Giving them a free opportunity that not only provides instruction in this field, but teaches them Bravery, Sisterhood and Activism, is a great start.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
50
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
This program is dedicated to girls, but as a small non-profit we may reuse some grant funded materials in other programs.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
This program will be open to all girls. We will market it in multiple school districts and there will be absolutely no fee to participate.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Our first goal is to have 50 students participate in Girls Who Code. Our second goal is to infuse the GWC curriculum into existing programs, like summer camp and after school childcare, that already have significant reach in our community.
Getting more girls involved in STEM programming directly promotes economic self-sufficiency and well being for women and girls. According to the State of Michigan, STEM jobs in the state will earn high wages and be in high demand through 2028. What’s more, Michigan's Career Outlook indicates that the need for Informational Security Analysts will grow 19.9% by 2028. These positions vary in educational requirements, but pay between $18 and $67 per hour. By offering programs that spark interest in STEM careers, the Y is incubating a generation of students to obtain successful high paying jobs. Furthermore, individuals with higher paying stable jobs are more likely to give back to the community and help improve the quality of life for all people in Emmet County.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We will measure our success by tracking participation. While it is free, participants will still need to register.
Much of the benefits of this program will be either entirely immeasurable, or immeasurable for years to come. I cannot tell you that we will change the tide of women in tech, but I can tell you we are going to try.
