Project Description:
CCSNM recognizes the increasing problems associated with low incomes in Northern Michigan. The Head Start Program addresses one component of this challenge by offering free early education for children from low-income families. To assist the Head Start Program, CCSNM provides a new patterned backpack for each Head Start student that includes school supplies, a child-appropriate toiletry kit, a change of clothing (sweat pants, sweat shirt, underwear and socks), and educational materials for parents on child development and parenting donated by the Child Abuse Prevention and Education Council. Additionally, with each backpack the student receives a handmade fleece blanket for the student to use at rest time at school. These backpacks give 3- and 4-year- olds and their parents significant support to begin their first exposure to a formalized learning environment.

CCSNM is committed to providing the necessities of life to at-risk children in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties without duplicating services from other area organizations. Kathy Reed, Project Coordinator submits a year-end report that includes the number of children served and recommendations for project improvements to the Board of Directors. The community benefits from this project in several ways. First, CCSNM provides assistance to Head Start teachers by ensuring children come with necessary supplies. Second, this project provides a sense of well-being and security for the 3- and 4-year-olds in Head Start. Third, parents receive educational materials on topics pertinent to child development and parenting. By supporting Head Start, its students and parents, CCSNM facilitates the positive impact of education in breaking the cycle of poverty in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Kathy Reed, Project Coordinator maintains good communication with the teachers at each location. She receives feedback if the number and contents of the backpacks are meeting the needs of the students and if changes need to made adjusts accordingly based on available resources.
