Project Description:

In the global marketplace, STEM jobs are in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there were 9.95 million STEM jobs in the US in 2019, yet around 2.4 million STEM jobs remain unfilled. While employers struggle to fill STEM-related opportunities, students are turning away from pursuing STEM education due to a lack of awareness of what STEM careers actually involve. National surveys find that nearly two-thirds of teenagers said they might be discouraged from pursuing STEM careers simply because they don’t know anyone in these fields or don’t understand what people in these fields do.
Junior Achievement will invite 7th and 8th-grade students from Emmet and Charlevoix counties to a day of STEM career exploration in the spring of 2022. This one-day event will feature a lineup of speakers who are women in STEM. This event will introduce students to mentors and careers in STEM and get them excited about their futures.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

200

What percentage are female?

50

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

This event was designed with the impact it would have specifically on young women in mind. Both boys and girls are invited to this event this year, but this event targets the growth and inspiration of young women specifically. The women in STEM we invited to speak at the event will show girls what is possible for them and increase their likelihood of pursuing a STEM career. Hestia funds will be used to invite classrooms of students, typically about half of them young women, to partake in this event.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Junior Achievement will work with middle school educators to determine student attendance for this event. JA serves students of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and identities. Over 55 percent of the students we serve in our northern footprint are from low to moderate-income households.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

By inviting 7th and 8th-grade students to participate in this event, we hope to bring awareness to STEM careers, guide students to think about their futures, and show young people, women in particular, what they can achieve. Women make up only 28% of the workforce in STEM. Young women who attend this event will see positive examples of women in STEM careers and gain access to mentors in these fields. At this event, the women who speak will share their stories with young women to show that STEM careers are for everyone with the curiosity and passion to pursue one.
A typical STEM worker earns two-thirds more than those employed in other fields, according to research. JA programs have a direct influence on the likelihood students will pursue a career in STEM. 51% of students that participate in JA programming are likely to pursue the same career path as their JA volunteer. When young women are introduced to a STEM career through JA programming, they become more likely to pursue it. Women who pursue STEM careers will likely earn more money than if they were in another field. This increased income allows for greater economic independence, which directly relates to Hestia’s mission of supporting economic self-sufficiency for girls.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

JA plans on integrating a student evaluation into the event to measure knowledge and attitude gains accrued as a result of participation.
