Project Description:

This project has two objectives.
The grant funding will be used to produce a women's history exhibit for the Beaver Island Historical Society. The exhibit will be on display in the Print Shop Museum and will honor the contributions Island women have made over the last 200 years to enrich our community. The exhibit honors women from different time periods covering the 1800s- present day.

The project is a leadership assignment for a young female intern named Elsie Burton who is employed by the Beaver Island Historical Society. This award will be used in part to award a scholarship to her for outstanding research and exhibit design.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

3000

What percentage are female?

55

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

Our intern is a Michigan Tech student. This will be her third year interning for our organization. She has exceptional talent and graduated top of her class. Her task will be to research 4 island women and write short narratives about each selection and to coordinate the file transfers for graphics and production. In July we will host a special women's history event for the exhibit opening and talk about each category and how the women were selected. She will be honored and awarded a $500 scholarship for her work.

The women in the community will be invited and encouraged to collaborate with her in the production of this exhibit. This process will add to the community ownership, thoughtful reflection and personal touchstones of the female struggles and accomplishments of island life.

Family members, women and the general public are invited to attend the event. This exhibit will be on permanent display. The first year of the exhibit, women's posters are on display in the lower level of the museum and years 2+ are rotated and displayed in an island "Hall of Fame" on the second level of the museum. This is an exhibit that grows each season and features collectible cards for each of the women honored.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

This is the third year my intern has worked at the museum. Our organization is honored Ms. Burton has returned and strongly believes in her skill sets to orchestrate a meaningful women’s history exhibit. A portion of grant funds will be awarded to her.

As for the exhibit selection of featured females, financial need is not considered. This exhibit honors extraordinary females of Beaver Island who are deceased. The candidates are chosen by criteria defined in advance by the Museum Operations Committee and the Executive Director.

Their selections are based on:
1. Was extraordinary for their time
2. Groundbreakers
3. Historic first for Beaver Island within a national theme
4. Are deceased

Women are selected and categorized into these timeframes:
1860-1900
1900- Pre WWII
Post WWII – 1976 (Bicentennial)
1976- 2000's.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Our intern was selected for this project because the leadership exercise is an important professional development opportunity for her. As a community leader myself, I want to empower young women to collaborate and contribute to the documentation and preservation of our community's social history.

A report and analysis by the National Women's History Museum finds that women's experiences and stories are not well integrated into US state history standards. The lack of representation and context in state-level materials presupposes that women's history is even less represented at the classroom level. This implies that women's history is not important. Our exhibit is intended to bring awareness and thoughtful reflection to female achievement whether their role was a homemaker or professional invoking questions about how living on an island was rugged and extraordinary.

Our project aligns with the Hestia and the Beaver Island Historical Society missions: to promote the economic self-sufficiency and well- being of women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties by defining the extraordinary female resiliency to Island living by preserving and sharing the unique history of Beaver Island and the Archipelago.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

The success of this project will be measured by the finished product results: prideful ownership by our intern, attendance at the exhibit opening, and audience engagement over the years as they visit the museum. We will also monitor feedback in our guest books and will engage in a talk back session after our event to learn more about what our audience liked, disliked or would have done differently.
