Planned Parenthood of Michigan will provide women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties with compassionate nonjudgmental reproductive health care and medically accurate comprehensive sex education. Reproductive health care services will be provided at Planned Parenthood’s Petoskey health center. Services may include breast exams; cervical cancer screening; colposcopy; birth control, hormone replacement therapy; mammogram referrals; menopause testing and treatment and midlife education; Pap test; routine physicals for women age 12 and older; testing and treatment for urinary tract infection and sexually transmitted infections; PrEP and PEP to prevent HIV for individuals with high risk of exposure, medication abortion, and LGBTQ+ services.

Sexual health education programs for young people include abstinence based, comprehensive sexuality education that provides information on puberty, hygiene, healthy relationships and information on preventing pregnancy and STIs/HIV.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

750

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

Planned Parenthood of Michigan tracks all patients served by gender, age, race, income level and pay source. Using our patient data we will allocate the support from Hestia based on the needs of our female patients. At the Petoskey health center 90 percent of the patients served are female.

For the students who participate in our education programs we ask for their gender on our pre and post knowledge tests. On average females represent 50 percent of the students served through our education programs and community outreach activities. This information is tracked and will be used to allocate Hestia funds.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

The criteria that will be used to identify recipients will include gender, income level and insurance status. Female patients ages 15 – 44 who experience incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level ($20,385 per year for a single person in 2022) will be the primary beneficiaries of this grant. Services will be provided based on the unique need(s) of each female patient.

Education programs for young women will be funded by Hestia based on the total percent of female youth served. Planned Parenthood does not charge a fee for the delivery of our education programs and offers this as a service to schools and community groups and therefore must rely on individual donations and grant support.

Hestia funds are a vital component to ensuring women and girls, especially those who experience low-incomes, in Emmet and Charlevoix counties have access to high-quality reproductive health care and sexual health education at the Petoskey health center.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Planned Parenthood of Michigan will meet the reproductive health care and sex education needs of women and girls who primarily experience low-incomes and may not have access to a full range of women’s reproductive health care services.

When women and girls have access to our services they are better equipped to delay and plan a pregnancy making it easier to pursue an education, achieve personal and family goals, and become financially stable. Access to our services also facilitates the detection of breast and cervical cancer in its early stages when it may be less invasive.

Providing young women with sexual health education supports their self-determination. When young women have the information they need to understand and care for their bodies they are often more confident and accept their bodies as they are. Through our education programs young women learn how to identify healthy and unhealthy relationships so they can stay safe and they learn refusal skills that are useful it they are pressured to have unwanted sex.

Our program aligns with Hestia’s mission by fulfilling women and girls’ reproductive and sexual health care needs. When these needs are met the result is empowerment, equality, and well-being.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Success will be defined by reaching our goal of serving 750 women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties. Planned Parenthood will use its electronic health record management system to track the demographic information of the female patients served such as insurance status, income level, county of residence and type of service provided.

To measure the success of providing girls with comprehensive sexuality education, Planned Parenthood uses a database to record the gender of students served, the session location, date, and title. When possible, post surveys are distributed to students to measure if their knowledge about the topic presented has increased. If students show an increase in knowledge about the topic, then the education session was effective.
