Project Description:
The Academic Instructional Mentoring™ (AIM) program plans to improve the performance of students in grades 6-12 by tutoring & mentoring those who are struggling as indicated by poor grades, reduced participation, low attendance, and lack of confidence. When a student falls behind, we often refer to learning gaps as a reason why they are having trouble understanding the material. Learning gaps are the difference between what a student is expected to have learned by a certain grade level versus what they have learned up to that point. A wide range of studies cite an array of factors that negatively influence student performance in school; children from families with low socioeconomic status (SES) and the COVID-19 pandemic are two that researchers are studying. Educators will attest that tutoring ranks among the most accepted solutions to reduce learning gaps aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic and influenced by poverty.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
50
What percentage are female?
25
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
Our 2022-2023 School Year Goal for middle and high school female students to reach is 25 with an additional 25 boys. We will use Hestia's funds for a portion of the girls in our AIM Tutoring program, while other grants or donors will cover the tutoring costs for the boys.
One 7th grade girl was overheard saying to her younger sibling at registration, "I'm getting help with English and Study Skills to learn how to get A's and B's rather than E's." Yes, she will become better at English and improve her organizational skills. But she doesn't realize that she will learn the importance of hard work, how to make better decisions, learn about her strengths, and become a more confident student. She is planting beneficial seeds for her little brother that it's okay to ask for help, and learning can be fun.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Students are referred by counselors, teachers, parents, and students who participate in the AIM program. One girl came in by herself to learn more about it. Her mother registered her immediately! All parents or guardians complete an interview. During that interview, if a learning gap is considered significant and the best intervention course is one-to-one tutoring and our small group 10-week Study Skills or Mentoring classes, they are placed on the schedule. We offer our three AIM programs full scholarships for all students in need or eligible to receive the Free Lunch or Reduced Cost Lunch program. The cost of paying a qualified tutor for one hour is $30.00 per session. Students whose families are not in "need" or are not eligible for the Free Lunch, or Reduced Cost Lunch Program pay $30.00 to sustain this program.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Our goal is to help students overcome academic challenges and lead them to autonomous or independent learning. Students receive individualized tutoring to support the classroom experience by a caring professional tutor to improve their grades on assignments, enhance organization, keep them on track with completing assignments and improve confidence and participation in class. Communicating with the student's classroom teacher is an important component.
Like many organizations worldwide, AIM recognizes that education decreases women’s poverty, gives women more employment opportunities, and leads to fewer unintended pregnancies and delayed marriage, and improves women’s mental and physical health.
"I've worked with many tutoring programs even in college. This is by far the best one," said Stasha Simon. "AIM meets all the different layers that a child needs to succeed. The teens get snacks, get a "Dinner-To-Go", a small youth pantry, and have school supplies. They get everything you possibly need, and they will find what they don't have."
The impetus for AIM Tutoring & Mentoring program is to provide young girls more confidence, a higher self-esteem than before, and skills needed to pursue success independently.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Outcomes are measured by pre and post-surveys given to students, teachers, tutors, and parents. Components of success are indicated by increased classroom participation, improved mastery of the subject, completion of homework, tutor-student relationship, comparing grades before and after the intervention, and whether the student who received AIM services did better academically and emotionally than similar students who did not.
